My ex used to think the Lime green spoilerless chrome wheeled CRX (delsol) that I was loaned when my car was getting fixed was the "coolest car ever"

There is no accounting for girls taste in cars

You wouldn't trade a Euro-R for an Evo 8? (assuming finances weren't an issue)

+1 for WRX wagon. Got some sporty, some practicality, and not too bad on fuel. Love mine :D

Usually hovering around 8 - 8.5ish/100km for open road.
Worst I've seen is around 10, that was mostly driving round town.

Wow, I was under the illusion that they got horrible gas mileage...

I stand corrected!

Yea they aren't as bad as they are made out to be, was surprised at the milage the first time I filled it after buying especially since I was used to a VR-4
Keep in mind though that its not an STI, and I don't have to deal with city traffic volumes.

Last trip from Christchurch to dunedin my twin turbo manual legacy 9L/100k. That was including a lot of gear, over 200kgs of people, the trip there and back and all the running around in between.

sti's and wrx's only use excessive fuel when push hard ALL the time but mostly its when retards do back yard exhaust jobs which botch up the o2 sensor which in turn makes the car run super rich and or explode. Same with poorly done intake mods.

Keep it stock or get it tuned well and they are no worse than most cars. My mate had a v8 wrx which he drove spiritedly and got around 480kms per 55ltr around town which is really not bad,

i think alot of the fuel guzzler rep came from the earlier ones, being both a bit underpowered and really crap off boost, they needed a fair bit of right foot to be useable.

anything modern is gonna be decent as long as its kept in a decent state of tune / o2s working properly like lunchie mentioned.

1999 Legacy B4 (previous) & 2004 Legacy GT-B (current) owner here. My knowledge \ experience so far

If you can stretch it go for the 2003-2005 GT-B (BL Sedan) these are Revision D and Subaru have fixed alot of issues with previous years. Although manuals are hard to come by, that said the Tiptronic in these are 5 speed and are bloody awesome compared to pre 2003 models.

Fuel usage

13-14 Litres per 100 kms (town only)
10.8-11.5 Litres per 100km (average mixed driving).
10 Litres per 100 kms (open road only)

Runs fine on 95 Octane as well, my 2nd best economy was using 95.

Finallly, you get alot of car for your money

- ANCAP5 safety
- Nice audio system
- Well appointed interior
- Bilstien Shocks
- Electric everything
- Performance, brakes and handling

Chipping these and doing the front pipe will also net you as much power as a WRX Sti, and IMO the Legacy is a much classier ride.
