Only has to meet 3 of the 4 criteria, Evos easily do so.
1988 KE70 Wagon - Slowly rusting
1990 NA6 MX-5 - because reasons
2018 Ranger - Because workcar
1997 FD3S RX-7 Type R - all brap, all the time
OMG so shiny!

To have a vehicle identified as a special interest vehicle, the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) must deem it to have historic value or it must meet three of the following four requirements:

The vehicle (or its make, model and submodel) is identified as being a collector's item in one of the following magazines or their respective websites – Australian classic car, Car and driver (US), Automobile (US), Motor (Australia), Motor trend (US), New Zealand autocar, New Zealand classic car, Road and track (US), Top gear (UK), Top gear NZ, Unique cars (Australia) or Wheels (Australia).
The vehicle's make and model has been (or was) manufactured in annual volumes of 20,000 units or less.
The vehicle is, and was manufactured as, a two-door coupe or a convertible.
The vehicle is, and was manufactured as, a high-performance vehicle.

I wonder if there is any chance JZS147 and JZS161 Vertex editions would qualify then... Let alone JZX100/110...

Willing to bet that none of those magazines know what an Aristo/Chaser is... let alone describing one as a collector's item. Fails on the coupe part and I daresay it's viewed more as a luxury family car than a high performance vehicle. Supra would be an almost definite.

It met all the criteria, the prick on the other line said he'd had a few people asking to and to not even bother because the Muscles get priority. Now I wish I had his name.

Priority? AFAIK there is x number of SIV's allowed per year so as long as you get in early enough, you meet the criteria then apply?

There are 200 per year, yeah. You need to meet the criteria and talk to the right person too, obviously. Though the first time I applied, it was one of the first years for it and they weren't as lenient as they obviously are now :)
