Funny Mechanic Advice Stories.

I want to share funny that happened yesterday. We had a 2005 Colt made by Mitsubishi motors arrive on tow truck as wont start. I said i would look at it but my senior said No the new employee would.

He spent ages working on car, removing coil packs and plugs, doing compression test and found no compression in 1 and 2 cylinders. He ran a scan thru the computer but no luck. He said head gasket or maybe ECU. I told him to pour oil into cylinders and it will work. He said for me not to be dumb you cant pour oil into cylinders. I told him again to pour oil into cylinders and he was stupid. He didn't do it and I was getting annoy with him so I walked over and poured little bit of 15/40w into 1 and 2 cylinder bore thru the spark plug hole. I then started the car and guess what it started.

Reason was car had been sitting for long time and needed to lubricate piston rings. But he got into angry with me as car was smoking very badly. I told him that's normal and give it few minutes will be back to normal. My senior just laughed at all this and told the new employee off for not listen to me.

Does anyone else have funny mechanic advise or story to share? I like reading them.

Back when I was at Toyota I sold a local garage a bunch of bits to do up a 3L Hilux engine.
One of the common things to replace was the oil pump housing and relief valve etc.

15131, 15132 and 15133 all slot into 11301

They called up and said the valve was wrong and wouldn't fit.
As several parts were supersessions I went though the parts list checking notes carefully to make sure I hadn't missed something about a change in valve. Nothing. Customer assured me it was wrong so I went around and had a look. All 5 mechanics in this work shop had looked at it, and all said it was wrong.
So I picked the valve up and slotted it straight into the oil relief hole. "What's the problem" I asked?
All five stood there like stunned mullets until one said, "we thought it went in there..." and pointed to a hole on the other side....

I loled hard.

16 valve escudo head gaskets can be put on back to front and upside, the only thing that doesn't line up is the oil gallery which feeds the cam journals.

we supplied a guy a head, he fitted it with head gasket on back to front and upside down, fired it up and promptly siezed the camshaft in the head. he rang us up, complaining, ranting etc etc, we said get some photos of the head and the head gasket and email them through, so he did, we circled where the oil feed piece in the gasket was, and where the witness mark was on the head (at the wrong end) and sent them back thru pointing out what he had done.....

few years ago i worked at a dealership as a car groomer. On a break oneday i was standing the workship talking to one of the mechanics while the other mechanic was doing a service on a vehicle. He lowered the car from the hoist and started filling it with oil, stops check dipstick and fills some more, checks stick again and carrys on filling and comments damn this thing takes a shit load of oil. Meanwhile me and the other mechanic are pissing ourselves laughing as the workshop floor starts filling with oil as he forgot to put the sump plug back on

The mechanic then gets real angry and shitty with us for not saying anything and just laughing so I walked off thru the workshop and go back to work. I go outside, take one of the vehicles that just sold so I could wash and groom it before the customer picks it up. So i get in and start driving it up to the wash bay, next thing i know my foot slips off the brake (from all the oil i walked thru) and hits the accelerator and BANG put the brand new suzuki swift thru the wall

Well guess who got the last laugh as the mechanic who messed the workshop was cleaning the floor i was picking up pieces of the wall out the car
