The condition is more due to the new zealand attitude to service and repair. Which is they do not untill it breaks.
If any car even a lancia beta can be realiable but only if serviced.

Most niva were never looked after.

Hold on, if the Lada was such a great car, why Toyotas survive "bad attitude towards servicing" and Ladas do not?

The car can be very boring but at same time be very good.
The car can be very fun but at same time be very crappy, because it falls apart on you (Lancias lol).

The cars that Ladas make now are still outdated. The classic 2101 through to 2107 were already outdated when they first came out in 70's through to 80's.

I lived around people who constantly were fixing their VAZ,ZAZ,GAZ,Izh/AZLK, and once the borders opened some of them swaped for 20yo Opels, VW, Audi, etc and never looked back. It is not normal to completely overhaul the engine at 50k. It is not normal to change the ball joints and bushes every season. Fuel pumps are not consumables. Cams are not consumables. It is not normal when a brand new car smokes blue. Oil is not fuel, brand new cars should not consume it. It is not normal to replace wheel bearings every 20k. It is not normal for people to manufacture their own parts to replace factory items, just because the replacement parts sold from factory are the parts that did not pass quality control on the line.

You even admit that brakes were made out of aluminium, which caused a lot of problems.

Throw enough money and you can make a great car out anything (even ZAZ).

Of course the ladas you had experience with had everything replaced with aftermarket items of high quality, and/or items custom built out high quality materials (although it is not hard to beat factory level), this does not compare to the shit that still comes out of Lada factory.

Most corollas do not need engine overhaul at 50ks. Ladas do.

Sorry Sergei, let me make my comment a little clearer

To be fair, most Corollas aren't either. But they're still going fine. The number of cars we see over here that haven't had the oil changed in 50,000kms is unreal.

Um Lada one of the best 4x4 ever made is a joke.Seen one snap from suspension arm off road not even anything extreme, best thing about them is the heater
Landcruiser or Patrol will piss on any Lada
Worked with a guy from Russia, when he saw my Landcruiser he told me they were 4x4 of choice in far east Russia because of reliability and toughness

engine do not need replace at 50000. It is like 75000 to 100000. When new engine cost 190 euro it is same price as service yes? So like servicing your car, you replace engine. Simple.
Camshaft not as bad as you make out, wheel beering have issue yes but easy fix with fiat part.
Mazda wankel engines burn oil and use as fuel, people still buy them. Lada not that bad, 1300 yes, 1600 very much no.

Lada have very strong gearbox. So good point for them.
Remember they were built by millions for the masses. They sold many more then the corolla in same area.

Lada made the most sucessful desiel engine ever. And still does.

When there was no japanese cars, lada best then skoda. So it was very good in its target market.

Are you serious with all those points?

How is replacing an engine comparable to replacing oil / other fluids? I'm not even going to touch the rest.

the engine is very simple to replace as sergi would know. It takes a matter of 1 hour or so. But its not saying that thats normal just its common.

Fiat 124 wheel bearing much the stock lada part and very eady switch.

I not try to defend lada, i just think for what they were built for they were good. My toyota corolla coupe is much better. But back home we never got them under communist rule. We had either skoda or lada to race with. So i have grow up working on them and know thier bad points and good.

And yes true about desiel engine.

Is it because the sold the most of them that you consider them the most successful diesel? I have no idea about diesels, just seems like a big claim to make. I wouldn't consider something that sold the most units to mean it was the most successful that's all.

The engine been used since 1934 and is still in production now. Also maybe power most famous russian exports.

Sky 74: BBC Knowledge at 7:30 tonight (basically in 5 mins), the description of some of the episodes is "Jeremy and James invade Greenham Common airbase to ask the question, did the Communists ever make a good car?"
