Head Lights?

Hi there all, time to replace the headlights in the FX.
What I would like to know is, what is the biggest bulb (wattage) I can put into it before having to put in relays etc.
At the moment it is the standard 55/60w bulbs. Can I put in 80/100w or even 90/130w bulbs without any problems??
What are peoples views?

Standard only unless you're going to upgrade the wiring.

Get some narva Plus 50s or plus 100s.

I forget what I run I think it's 100s, they give 100% more light than a standard bulb at the same watt rating.

Buy a relay kit, cheap as on Ebay think the last one cost me $40NZ delivered. Also, 130/90's technically aren't legal but unlikely to be picked up at WoF time.

Why would you recommend all that over buying better direct replacement bulbs Callum?

Decent voltage feed will help no matter what bulbs you run, factory headlight wiring is often a bit weak especially as it gets older. Also has better quality plugs for the bulbs that don't melt with high wattage bulbs.

+50 definitely brighter.
They achieve this by overheating the filament. You would get similar result if you would use 9V bulb in 12V system. Obviously the bulb will not last as long, but it will glow brighter.

Nah they're noticably different. Went from standard bulbs to the +100s in the Levin, huge difference on low beam.

You noticed no difference?

I noticed a good improvement in both ae111, which were running different bulbs initially, both improved.

Big difference in Donna's Starlet, and also in my Sprinter. I think she did +50 and I did +100.

Also used +50's. Both in my old '91 Lancer and in the Corolla. You could definately notice the difference in both cars.

I wouldn't use anything but the plus 50's or plus 100's.

They are are noticeably brighter than standard bulbs.

Not sure if its as miuch as claimed brighter, but it must be as near enough as matters to it.

Not sure that plus 46 has the same marketing appeal as plus 50 for example.

Ok guys that bought the +50/100 bulbs. You've said they're brighter, do they last as long as long as a "normal" 55/60w bulb? therefore worth the money?

They don't last as long but what value do you put on being able to see at night? I live rural and do a lot of miles so worth it to me. Lifespan seems about the same as the 130/90's that I used to run.

No they dont, Narva even say that in their advertising that the performance globes dont last as long (with the exception of a couple of 24v options)

I just bought a pair of the +100s last week. noticeably brighter than the previous bulbs too

I also noticed that there is a much bluer band of tint at the end then goes clear. This is noticeable on low bean being "whiter", then going to high is more yellow.

The stock wiring is barely good for the specified loads.
The problem is that the stock wiring uses relays but not in normal way: for high beam full power still goes through the stalk. Imagine if you put 100W on each side you will have about 15A going through fairly small wire.

I have seen people chuck 90W bulbs and complain that they are worse than 60W originals.

I have converted a few cars to full relay system where even stock bulbs were brighter due to less voltage drop.

If you put voltmeter across the light bulb on stock wiring with stock light bulb you will see one or two volts difference to what is on the battery/alternator.

They will last a lot longer than a tank of fuel, and be cheaper too. So in the big picture it's not a huge cost.

How big does the wire need to be to run a couple of 500W flood lamps?
