Yes, I do know how power to weight works. That's why I said 1000kg max. I'd like a 400kw 600kg car. 8) But might be hard to achieve.
nz_climber wrote:I am biased, but my pick of car will be a lotus 7 replica with a pretty standard engine 1.6L or 2L engine (turbo if you need it) and the car will be quicker than 90% of the drivers out there, and run circles many higher power and expensive cars.

I've had a lotus 7 replica with a "worked" A15, but it was more like 700kg. It was fun to drive, but I'm a real fan of having a roof.
I have a 153kw 820kg KP starlet. It is faster than most cars.

I want grossly faster than 99% of all cars! :D

I was thinking similar! Also there is a sequential shifter for an RB on TM for $2k at the mo lol

Parts bin is pretty good, reasonable number of aftermarket parts available, just not that lightweight, but power and stripping it out would make some difference.

Have been thinking MR-S recently, but good luck on wedging an engine in that will give you 400kw. 2GR with supercharger maybe?

Your budget is quite low for a racecar and the high power expectations you have. Considerations for cost of cage, safety equipment etc will push you back a fair amount.

You will need to lose 300-400kg to get down to 1000kg.

Go through the rule book with a fine tooth comb and make a note of what limits they impose.. Capacity, fuel, forced induction, rpm, drivetrain/chassis/suspension modifications, aero etc.

Except you've said its to be a road car too, so you are going to compromise on all of those things anyway to keep it roadlegal.

If building for a racing class, make it a pure race car, if building it as toy, then figure out whats going to be cheap fun. 400kw and <1000kg is never going to be cheap. A chassis strong and stiff enough to handle 400kw and a strong drive train equipped with enough grip to get it to the ground is either light or cheap, never both.

Pushrod V8 for cheap power and parts. Pity it'll be half your weight budget..

Any combination of parts from any manufacturer.
This is hypothetical remember, I can't afford to work on the car I have now!
An MR2? That would be a bitch to work on, with that tiny engine hole!
It's also almost 1300kg!

I'd like to put an EJ22T in a morris minor shell. :D All the mechanicals/suspension would need re-engineering of course. 400kw is probably not feasible.

apologies, will keep hypothetical. Was assuming you were actually assembling a plan to build a sub 1000kg RWD 400kw atw car.

subaru justy with a forged ej25 and a large turbo? get a rear wheel drive conversion spool and good to go :)

mx5 with a 1uz and supercharger? *hmm.. makes one think..

edit: winning entry!

well if it's a class car thats road legal, then it's either a Targa car or a mental gravel car ??? therefore it will have an extensive rollcage structure that will make the chassis more rigid, and easily keep it inside the weight limit.

My Levin, Reg on hold (only need MSNZ authority card for WOF) weighs 860kg full glass and Std weight doors. strip some weight, add some more bars and fit a nasty Rodeck and T10, and would still be under the weight limit

Btw $10-15k is completely unrealistic for a full reliable build at this level for track imho.

For that sort of budget you are dreaming.
What diff will hold 400kw?
What gearbox?
If you were looking at 300kw you MIGHT get there building it all yourself but 400kw is fairyland stuff.

Its already begun... but in Australia.

However, no idea of what power it will be making.

Don't you think 400+kw from a 7agte might be a bit optimistic?

willie made 555whp (410wkw) in his AW11 4agte.

engine would Have to be a 13b turbo

and in either an mx5 or a lotus 7 type car

Okay, maybe 400kw:1000kg was too optimistic. The Bugatti Veyron has a power to weight of 389kw:1000kg
And the Murcielago is 288kw:1000kg.

Lets go for 300kw:1000kg then!

upon researching my second choice engine, a 410 Rodeck making 6-800hp is at least $8K and would need a freshen up.

300kw far more acheivable for the budget.

I'm not chasing that kinda power. Things have a tendency to break/ get very expensive. Pretty sure the compliance requirements get equally extreme here with that kinda power= even more expensive, as it will be road legal/ registered.

For that kinda power I'd be looking at v6 + forced induction as its cheaper to come by here in Aussie.

But meh, more interested in having something nice to drive than that insane! 8O

I wonder if my attitude will change 6 months after finishing it...
