would this pass WOF?

Postby bzrspeed » Tue Jun 12, 2012 3:40 pm

I have just finished fitting the Wheels to a Skoda 120L but am worried about how much they stick out of arches. As you can see from the photo the Skoda already has forest arches on it. As it is Rear Wheel Drive it has large wheel in back for traction.
I am not 100 percent sure so advice would be good.

I think the tread has to be inside the guards. But some one else who knows the rules will confirm that.

They say that you shouldn't see the tread, otherwise fail, iirc.

In saying that, i've had warrants with more rubber sticking out than that.

Do you want the "it might sneak past" or the "is it actually legal" answer? Depending on inspector you might be ok but technically they look like the offset change would require cert. Tread is borderline outside the guards and the tyres look a little narrow for the rims from that angle.

Are you reffering to this?

bzrspeed wrote:I was driving to work this morning and I got pulled over by the police. They said since I have a straight cut gearbox and you can hear it a mile away (it is a straight cut gearbox, they are very loud

If so I would hardly call it abuse, at worst he did not know what he was talking about and caused you some inconvenience and a bit of cost but probably no more than some of the people you have inconvenienced with your gearbox that can be heard "a mile away".

Nothing worse than having to get a car de-stickered when your car is technically legal but lets not throw the term abuse around unless there is some actual abuse eh?

The cop pulled you over because as you admit your car is a neusance and disturbs the peace.

Abuse of power is victimizing someone without power, in the case the cop ticketed you for what he believed was a violation, in this instance he was wrong but lets be honest - if your car is that loud it should be illegal.

He didnt abuse his power, he got his details wrong on whats required for a cert - man up and deal with it dude, our cops are overworked and underpaid and if he pulls over some selfish fellow who is happy to disturb all those around them with noise pollution even if it is technically legal ill pat him on the back and buy him a beer.

I would be worried about the size of the tyres you would have to run for those rims, what are the width of your rims?

Must be making a lot of power to require such wide tyres as you say. Ask around for where is a fair place to get a WOF check done. Some places will be biased, some places are just plain useless. So it would pay to ask work mates etc

Could ask that of any manner of cars out there.

By the photo, it should fail a WOF. Doesnt look like they stick out much, can you adjust the camber to pull the top in? (assuming that pic is the front)

This is true I guess. I mean it's why I needed 7" width minimum rims on all 4 corners of my weak FWD

They are the rules unless a manufacturer allows otherwise, yep.
