NZKW Race Seats - Anyone used one?

Postby 85AW20v » Sat Jun 16, 2012 3:19 pm

Looking at getting a new seat for the MR2 and was wondering if anyone has used these ones off TradeMe. Yes/no/maybe?

Personally I havent used them.

Unless they have gone through some forum of crash testing, my spine isnt interested.

Racetechs are very well priced for the amount of r&d thats gone into them.

Do your seats need to be FIA compliant?

Webster (Dexgt) has helped somebody fit them to their race car, and said he was seriously not impressed with their construction methods.

No - seats don't need to be FIA compliant - just doing club stuff and playdays.

Thanks Leon - thats the sort of thing I want to hear about.

Anyone else??

Will you be running a harness or just your 3 point belt?

If you dont need the lap and crotch strap provision, there is a pair of Racetech "Road" on TM for $700, which is a great price. They are a perfect seat for what you have planned, and a great street seat too as they have lower sides to ease access.

Here's a link to the last discussion I was involved in regarding these seats viewtopic.php?t=82173&highlight=nzkw

If you do a search for "NZKW" on here you get lots of hits

"Understeer" is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"Oversteer" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"Horsepower" is how fast you hit the fence.
"Torque" is how far you take the fence with you.

In that case I definitely re-recommend the Racetechs that are on TM :)

Yep - that's the one. And yes - quite a few years now. The log book/rollcage homologation was issued in 19/06/2000 - just went and had a look - I didn't remember it!!

stick to something descent then, safety gear is not something to skimp on. key thing with a seat isa make sure it is a snug fit width wise, and that the harness holes are high enough up that they dont compress you spine when you pull the harnesses tight

Do you have a "groom" one for the drivers side available?

Unfortunately the "Groom" seats never seemed to sell well so they stopped making them, something about the Bride now controlling the finances & the end of one's racing days

This.

A crash is a crash, I have seen as bigger offs and crashes in CS events as any.

I would be looking for a FIA approved seat at minimum, they can be brought cheap enough and you know they are safe because they have had to meet rigorous safety testing to get FIA patented and approved.

I use Sabelt seats and harnesses from Autoquip, pricing was really good, the seats were cheaper and lighter than the equivalent from Racetec, Recaro or Sparco and are very comfortable.
Harnesses are quite reasonable also.

I'm 6ft 4, racepro's were WAY to small for me, from memory they suit someone around 5ft 10 or even less.

sit in the seat. see where the harness holes are in relation to your shoulders, if you shoulders are above the harness holes, and you are involved in a hard impact, you WILL suffer some form of spinal compression.

The harness holes should be level with your shoulders. It means you SHOULD shop around till you find a seat that is right fitment for you, just like your helmet, race suit, etc.
