What starter to use? C160 into AE82 with 16V Bluetop

Postby Allister S » Wed Jun 20, 2012 1:53 pm

Hey,

I'm putting a C160 6speed LSD with a Blacktop flywheel into an AE82 chassis with a std. 16V Bigport bluetop.

What starter motors are compatible with this setup? I'm keeping TVIS but will run Blacktop extractors.

What's the best (highest power/lowest weight/most reliable) starter that would work?

Is starter on intake side better than exhaust side (where they get cooked)?

Thanks, Al

wont be able to put starter on the intake side unless you reroute the water pipe out the back of the water pump as it runs through the starter motor area. if you want to run a starter motor on the intake side it'd need to be a 20v one (they are different to the 16v n/a ones so wont bolt up at the rear)

i cooked a starter motor with it on the exhaust side running blacktop headers, but that was only because the headers were un-heatwrapped and touching the starter unit itself.

if you can get the headers away from the starter some distance and wrap them, i think it will last a lot longer.

Thanks for the info.

Do GZE Starters fit on C series boxes? They go on the intake side right?

You can also fit a heat shield to the starter. Done that with mine and no issues with blacktop extractors.
See ya
