Work Towing Vehicle Suggestions (Ex Nissan Patrol)

Looks like the work Patrol is getting too expensive to maintain and we're looking at getting a new one - its done close to 300,000km.

In the past we've had bad experiences with the turbo diesel Nissan's and since going with petrol, we haven't had to replace any engines!

If we go with the new Nissan Patrols, we're stuck with diesel.

Good thing about diesel is that since there is a lot of idle time we're not paying road tax for the time idling.

Bad thing is service intervals are half that of petrol (unless newer ones do not need this?)


The nature of the work is pretty harsh on the vehicle. I tow a 1,200-1,500kg trailer with road testing equipment.

The work consists of:
1) Stop on point to test
2) Initiate and carry out test (20 seconds)
3) After test complete, accelerate to next point (2-200m), Stop and back to #1

Each year for about 2 months, we complete a yearly contract where we would do approx 10,000 of these tests plus travel all over the country to the sites for one job and as you could imagine, the vehicle does a lot of work.

Things that need to be considered:
- Capable of towing trailer
- Engine bay big enough to accommodate second alternator
- Air-con must stay in
- Big enough inside the cabin to have a platform for some one to lay down (Take one of the rear seats out if possible)
- 4X4 is needed to get to some sites and the odd time we get stuck :o
- $50k-$90k new, plus modifications
- 40,000-60,000km/year

Soooooooooo... What are some suggestions?

New Navarra maybe? Certainly would worry it with the weight. New Tritons are rated at 3T towing too, and have the Mitsi 10 year warranty too I think?
200 series Landcruiser is the answer though of course 8)

Haha i try to get them to switch to Toyota but its hard changing their minds.

Dont really want a Ute, Something like a 4x4 so sleeping in the back when needed can be done. Also keeping all the spares in the cabin is a bonus - so many and need protection from weather. I know a canopy is good but naaaaaa :P

wow you broke a td42? I wonder if its the repeated stop start nature of driving so something...I would have thought the nissan donk would be ideal

I would be surprised/impressed if you killed a TD42 too!

Whats the warranty like on the Nissan?

Surprised the Nissan can't hack it. Starting / stoping must be pretty hard on it.

I hear the 70 series Landcruiser is virtually industructable.

a tidy, well maintained, second hand Porsche Cayenne.

Seriously.

No other SUV in the world would match it for build quality or refinement.
I know of a good one for sale too :wink:


But if they want to buy/lease new then 150 series prado or Pathfinder/Navara (though from a brief driving experience of driving a new V6 diesel STX the older 450nm model has a smoother flatter torque curve and would be preferable for daily use

Thanks for suggestions peoples!

I would like to go the Landcruiser 70 series but auto is what we want. too bad these aren't auto!

Sounds like work is set on the Patrol for now and getting another something at the end of the year.

The diesel turbos we were blowing up were the Terranos. Since these didn't last, they didn't want to touch another diesel again.

My advise as an ex Mitsi mechanic (only left a couple of months ago), NEVER touch a triton. They give trouble now, and will be even worse once they get older. Oh and the 10 year warranty is a bit of a have too. You have to apply for the extra 7 years or how ever long it is.
