What should it cost to get the slip rings replaced on an alternator rotor?

Just picked up a second hand alternator to refresh and hold as a spare and the slip rings are completely worn and need replacement, just wondering whether i should go hit pick a part again and grab another one ~$50, but could also be shagged. Or just throw the rotor to an auto sparky and get the slip rings replaced.

Anybody able to recommend somebody to do this in Auckland?

Replacing slip rings is a PITA job so will probably carry a high price tag at most places.

Plus you want to make sure that it's done right, especially if you spend much time at high rpms.

Knowing how much our auto sparky charges, Im guessing you would be lucky if you got change from a hundy. It prolly doesnt TAKE an hour, but Im guessing you will be charged for one!

Cheers guys. looks like my pickapart alternator isnt worth the $43 i paid for it. Case is broken and rotor isn't spinning freely, slip rings are worn right thru so i'm going to test the rectifier module and regulator and drop teh rest of it in the bin I think. If it hadn't been caked in a 3mm thick layer of crap i might have noticed teh cracked case and left it where it was.

Have done quite a few, they are a pain, and they take ages,
probably in almost an hour in some of them,
and waiting for them to set properly so they last makes it at least an overnight job.

In saying that I would never run a rotor in a race car that has has a slipring replacement considering the RPM it will spend most of it's time at.
