alternator query

Postby RS13 » Wed Jun 27, 2012 2:16 am

Hi guys,

Replacing the alternator in my partner's car. Standard is 65amp and proving quite hard to get, however the alternator from the injected version of the motor (hers is carb) is 70amp, easy to get and bolts straight in.

I assume that running the slightly larger amperage alternator won't cause any problems?

Cheers.

so long as the light circuit doesnt drive an electric choke, had a hell of a time with a st171 corona with a 3sf carbed motor, injected alt didnt work.

other than that anything will work piece of piss

lol yeah that is a common trap, but carb'd versions are not that common anymore.

Cant you just fit new brushes to your old alternator?,brushes cheap as chip, easy to replace.Usually works out way cheaper than replacement alternator.

If it was that easy I would have already! Its' the bearings, they're making a fair bit of noise and lately have been making a metal-on-metal squealing noise on warm startups. Still charges fine. Found a good second-hand one with warranty quite cheap so am looking at replacing it with that when it lets go completely. This isn't a car we intend to keep long-term, hence the preference for a cheap easy fix.

Out of curiosity, how much does a brush kit go for? I assume its' possible to buy an overhaul kit with bearings as well?

depends who you buy off.. Ebay, bout US$16 for both bearings, US$10 or so for brushes and holder.

Toyota want your left nut. ($35 each for bearings.. stopped asking after that.)

appco/repco do brushes and bearings, also rectifiers, regulators, slip rings the lot, not too expensive at trade

I think the bearings are less than $10.00 each at Wilson Bros/Saeco etc.
