Buying back a written off car

Postby ee904age » Mon Jul 02, 2012 1:48 pm

Due to a minor incident last week my VT Commodore has been written off. The damage was minimal but as the car was only insured for $3700, it wasnt worth repairing. I'm interested in getting it back if I can as I'd like the running gear to transplant into my ute.

Has anyone here done this before? What is the process? Do I just have to turn up at Turners on the auction day like everyone else?

It was insured with State by the way, and has only been written off officially today so haven't had payout or anything yet.

ring your insurance company - they will either let you know if you can buy ti back and they will usually take that value of buying it back off the insurance payout

otherwise yeah - track it to the auctions and see if you can buy it back cheaper there?

I've done it, vehicle was insured with AMI, written off to the tune of $4,500, bought it back for $1,000, repaired it by buying a shell off a mate for $200 and paid another $250 for painting.

Talk to the insurance company, let them know you want to retain the vehicle, they should put a price on it and you'll receive the payout less that amount. Providing they are happy to do that for you.
