Teach me about widening steel rims

Going to swap the 12s out on the Alto to 13s. Before I put them on however I want to widen them.
Altos apparently need 35-45 offset wheels. So am I best to get a 13 rim with a 45 offset so it sits in the furtherest, then measure from the edge of the rim to the edge of the guard, then let the person know at the shop?
I know elite wheels in Christchurch do this mod, anyone else?

Depends if the front or the back of the wheel is getting widened?

If they widen the back, you want the face of the wheel to be in the right place to start with.

If they widen the front, you'll need to set the face of the wheel into the guard further, so the wheel can be widened to meet the edge of the guard?

I was just working on the theory that only the front of the wheel that you see gets widened.

Get the barrels from TWL or similar and get the centres put into them, just make sure the diameter suits. First you need to work out what tyres you want, then that determines rim width. Dummy up for offset, and of course then you need to cert the car as well.

I always thought wheels were widened from the back (ie. behind the face was cut, and a band welded in, extending the wheel further into the wheel well, rather than extending the front outward)? Except in the case of 2 or 3-peice wheels...

You can band to front or rear of the centre, just depends on what you are trying to achieve and the shape of the rim.

One of our regular competitors in Honda City's (who wins every grass event in the area) turned up to a sealed autocross in his newly acquired Honda City turbo on sticky rubber.
