Loss in power and surging under throttle

car is a ae92 corolla carby 1600cc. I was driving it the other day and it was only after about 45minutes of traveling the car went a bit wierd. Shudder under throttle like a fuel starve or something.

It doesnt always happen but its really annoying when it does. Generally tends to start at a lower RPM too.

My only thought was maybe fuel filter clogged up after running my fuel tank fairly dry... maybe stirring all the crap in the tank up?

when was last time carb was tuned?
Maybe blocked fuel needle in carb.
Fuel filter could also be issue.

Have you taken off air cleaner and checked carburator butterfly?

Is it only under load? Check leads and plugs for signs of oil and water?

No damage to leads although one did come off under load a few weeks back. No idea when carb was last tuned if it ever has been. Only really happens under load yeah

if its under load,it is more than likely electrical ie spark plugs,leads,coil etc.1 of my cars was doing a similar thing, turned out to be a fautly spark plug

Any kind of fuel flow/quantity problem happens first at high RPM & under a load when there is a heavy demand for fuel, so no, it can't possibly be a filter problem at low RPM.

What's the compression?
Condition of the plugs & their wires?

One problem i had with my old carby corolla was the mechanical advance wasnt working because it was seized in the distributor. Caused rough running and loss of power. Not sure if yours has mechanical advance or its electronic though.

Time for a 99c tuneup?

You can draw rubbish through the carb jets by running the car, sticking your hand over the top of the carb, allowing it to draw down to the point where it's close to stall, doing it again.
If that doesn't work the $1.99 tuneup consists of the above, but open the throttle while covering the carb.
The answer is Helmholtz!

it has stopped now. No idea why or what was going on but i suspect what ever it was will be back. Havent had a reason to check compression etc.

I was going to strip things down today but givin it is another beautiful day in wellington (pissing down with rain and windy) i will pass.

Havent looked at plugs but leads are newish and i have no problem with fuel at higher RPM ... its all just lower in the rev range. (under 4000)

ok well after having a good look there was oil in the spark plugs in 1st abnd 3rd cylinder. Replaced the tappet cover and lead rings things (insert proper name here) but yet the car still struggles.

Its always under 3500rpm and once you get to there your all smooth sailing. To start sometimes i have to almost ride the clutch a bit but the car picks and chooses when it wants to do this.

Any other thoughts?

Matt,

Quite a common fault and it will be a intermittent missfire underload. New set of plugs and h/t leads will fix the problem.

Yeah? It just started the other night randomly. Tonight driving back from waikanae it was all good until I got back into town then it stared again ...

My 2E EE90 used to struggle when taking off. It would almost die when under load but get past a certain RPM and it would take off quite violently (well as violent as a 2E can). I replaced lots of stuff to get it to work. Last thing on the list was the spark plug leads. The spark was jumping from one lead to another causing it to struggle. Replaced them and it went fine again.

for the sake of the $40 odd its going to cost for leads i think thats an easy option ;)
