Cat converter

Can someone tell me and link evidence as to whether it is a legal requirement to have a catalytic converter kept in cars exhaust when you modify it?

It's a legal requirement to have one fitted if you do an engine swap to any car made after 1990 or registered after May 2012. Other than that you can run no cat at all if you wish.

That's how I understand it. I had my cat removed and car was 1st reg after May 2010, I did talk to the shop who replaced it for me and they didn't seem to understand the new law. Have since had trouble free warrants, knowing it might come back to bite me I have kept the factory cat as a bolt in replacement if I ever have an issue.

Freeing up a few ponies in the swift?

Read the links. WoF requirements differ from LVV requirements, although as Kiwi-Corolla stated that's only for an engine swap.

As above, a cat isn't required for a warrant in anything. Its a cert/compliance thing.

And once you have your cert then its not going to be picked up on warrants if you ditch it after anyway

They prob upped the price when it was proposed to change the law making them mandatory. Which they should be.

Absolutely no point them being mandatory unless you test them to make sure they are working, a blocked cat is worse than no cat.

I agree. The laws should have been revamped when they phased out leaded fuel.
