Tyre size dilemma

Postby FST4RD » Mon Jul 16, 2012 12:29 pm

Hey all.
My little daily currently has 135-80-12s. Frankly they are super dodgy and scare me.
I'm the weekend I acquired some rays super light 14s from a friend who didn't want them anymore. They fit perfectly and I got them for beer money.
I want to fit 155s to them and seen you can get 50 and 55 profile, but they don't seem to be common (maybe I'm wrong?).
Are 60 series tyres that much bigger? Or would I be better looking at a 165-50?
I think it's going to be more the height of the tyre rather then the width that will potentially be the issue if anything.

the series is the percentage of tyre width in the side wall height.

so 155 60 series mean sidewall height is 155 * 0.60 = 93mm
165 50 series would therefore be 165 * 0.5 = 82.5.
155 50 = 77.5mm

A 60 series is a pretty significant change. Just make sure you don't go too wide and have a car that aquaplanes in the wet due to too much tyre width for the weight of the car.
Reality: A nasty hallucination that is caused by excess blood in the alcohol stream.

Thanks for that info.
I believe 165-50-14 is far more common then 155-50 or 55-14?

from a quick look through a few tyre suppliers books the only one close is a nankang 165/55
no one else lists smaller than 165/60 (than i can find with the places we use)

Found a few that do 165/55/14's.
Nankang AS1, Continental, Falken.
Can get the Nankangs for under $100nzd... if I live in the UK!
So be interesting to see what they are worth here...

Yeah that's what I was hoping! :D

Only place I can see it might rub is the inside front at full lock... But I have a hammer to try and fix that!

The new Conti agents have containers arriving soon, with stock available in the next two to three weeks. I took the call from the tyre shop about this size. (I work for the previous conti importer)

Ah right.
You don't happen to do nankang, federal or falken? I know they also do a tyre in this size.
Might grab the continentals and then track down 2 others in the same size.

Try Affordable Tyres on Mowbray St, they always seem to import oddball sizes. They're showing quite a few 165/55/14s available 2nd hand on their website, cheaper than buying new if you're not exactly sure how the size will work.
