Toyota Ist vs Suzuki Swift

Postby duddley » Sat Jul 21, 2012 6:46 pm

Comrades I am looking for a new car for the mrs and she quite likes the Ist and the Swifts. Does anyone know of any common issues with either car and what would every choose out of the two?. The car will mostly be used for around town driving and the occasional trip down the motorway cheers.

I actually really like Swifts. Almost bought a brand new one over the Evo - everyone I know that has one loves them and not much seems to go wrong with them. If I wanted to get a (sub 5 year old) small hatch there aren't many cars I'd pick over a Swift [Sport]

I would go for (an went for) Ist. They are very well built, good handling, not too bad performance, very good economy, and the interior is much nicer than on Swift.

if you are looking at the 2005 onwards ones, they only "common problem" issue they have is the central locking actuators get noisey then crap out.
Just make sure it has been regularily serviced as alot of people that brought them new were first time new car buyers are thought that a 3 year warranty ment that you didnt have to do anything to it for 3 years, oil changes etc included.......

Rear wheel bearings flog out too, but they're not massively dear to replace. I'd be keen on a turbo'd Sport version 8)

1990 NA6 MX-5 - because reasons
2018 Ranger - Because workcar
1997 FD3S RX-7 Type R - all brap, all the time
OMG so shiny!

Mate of mine drives a new Swift daily as a company car, he mentioned something about the cheapness of the interior. Also rattles and squeaks quite a bit for a new car, I don't think hes' much of a fan of them anymore due to build quality.

My grandfather owns an IST, top little car. Reasonably peppy for a 1500cc, quite firm factory suspension so handles really well, I'd definitely take one over a Swift.

The old lady has an ist. Ain't a bad car for the money. Same at the usual echo drivetrain. Goes well for what it is and it's roomy inside.

Only issue we have has was a cv joint flogging out.

yip, even the sports have a cheap feel, the sport seats for instance looks like a tacky $5 chinese attempt at WRX seat. they are a CHEAP car and its things like that which make them cheap

Ended up buying a 2004 Vitz rs as it felt nicer to drive and the mrs "liked the bodykit".
