Yeah, You're right actually, it's not as silly as I remember it

Does the 5 speed also cruise 60 @ 3000 in 4th???

I'm used to cruising at 2000 rpm, guess I exaggerated when i spoke before

4th gear on a C56 @ 3000rpm should be 75km/h

FWIW - 8,000rpm in 4th:
C56 201km/h
C160 169km/h

Actually, forget I said that. If you're paying to get it done, you won't get much change from $2000 for a decent ECU installed and tuned properly. Not really cost effective given that you don't have any internal modifications. Blacktop 4AGEs are quite well-tuned from factory and there isn't much more you can squeeze out of it without spending huge money, even more than what the car is worth.

It totally depends on how far you want to take it. If you're working with a small budget but want a solid streetcar or to get into trackdays (and the car is your daily driver) the best place to start is upgrading brakes and suspension. No point making more power if you're going to understeer everywhere and get outbraked by Daihatsu Miras around corners.. decent pads and fluid are a couple of hundred, I notice you're shopping for lowered springs too which is a good start. You want it as stiff as possible so shop around for decent front/rear strut braces, also look at replacing any old, worn out bushes etc with new or aftermarket ones. Decent rims/tyres are also well worth it in terms of handling gain.

Your car was designed to run on higher octane fuel than that in NZ, so run 98 and reset the ECU occasionally, its' simple to do and has a noticeable difference in power over running 95 or 91.

best thing you can do to a blacktop is remove it from the car completely and replace it with a B18CR

Something about a honda engine in a toyota just feels so wrong

Whats your budget theres heaps you can do but its costly

as said before do all the handling mods first then look at weight reduction after that if your wanting to keep it na

With a factory ecu id stick to

Headers
Exhaust
Cams (either new from kelford or get them reground from franklin) (280 max on stock ecu off the top of my head)
adjustable cam gear on exhaust side for overlap
fuel mixer to lean it out as they run rich
cold air intake
chuck on dyno to check afrs
retard timing 2 degrees for more bottom end torque (confirm on dyno)

thats without opening the engine

Then theres thinner headgaskets 0.8-0.6mm
Headwork ie port+polish
higher comp pistons
stronger rods + bolts

but it gets costly

you could build a 7age yourself for roughly 2-3Kish

7a block
blacktop pistons got from factory engine
gasket kit
rodbolts
bearings
ecu (ms3 is an option)

hi comp 7age would be fun :p

again whats your budget

I'd say the only thing wrong about it would be how driving an AE111 with a 4AGE in it would seem if you'd put a Honda motor in one and had been driving it around for a few weeks.

But in terms of being a purist I could see how wanting to stick with what it came with and making it grumpy would appeal.

Changing to a

7age
2zz
1zz
2azfe

Etc all toyota motors that would be fine

(I think the 3s/5s engines are heavy pigs so im bias)

But I get the reasoning for the honda engines there easy to get and cheap to get parts for

Only problem is the engine spins the wrong way for RWD. Unless you like to drive in reverse very fast.

or is that engine different? (i know its a different engine but the way its designed i mean)

edit: nevermind just remembered the s2000 is rwd.

i didnt think of that but i have noticed that everything is back to front on fwd hondas so your right.

they thing to remember about the blacktop engine is once you have the basic Intake exhaust and cams everything else is going to cost big money.

the first 30hp. cheap

the next 30hp.... heaps

Altenza? is that what you get when an altezza rearends a mazda atenza? :D

Pretty sure every A and S series motor is a cast iron block, later 3s motors had alloy sump casting and stuff, but block is still good old iron.

2zz was first toyota performance motor with ali block I believe.

doubling the factory output is cheap?! :P

honda do better NA 4 cylinder engines than any other manufacturer i can think of by a long stretch, its simple really :) (not counting bikes :P)

if you want straight line speed, you have the wrong car. if you want to go fast round corners well... theres alot more stuff above power on the list of things that help.
