Drove over the railway track at between 50 and 60kmph and $&#$% 2x 18" tyres, plus took a chunk out of one rim (both on one side)

Bulldoze that $&#$% town to the ground already. $&#$% shithole.

Ring NZTA or the local council or Kiwirail, and ask who their insurer is, and make a claim through them. Or take them to the disputes tribunal if you can be bothered.

They have to maintain roads and rail crossings in a reasonable manner, and if they don't they are liable for fixing the damage. Its the same with potholes.

But it will take ages, as they all fight over who owns what parts, and what actually caused the damage to your car.
But if you wanted to get it fixed really quickly find an awesome lawyer to get the crossing/part of track closed untill they repair it and your car. Bet you'd get the car fixed within a day.

i would think, you'd have a hard time pinning responsibility of a pothole or f*cked road on someone for a death, let alone a couple popped tyres and a mag wheel repair

As said, roads need to be upkept, and if they arent, you can claim the cost of damages to your car.

Take photos of the section you ran over, and close ups of where the eroded asphalt is missing from either side of the track, and get on that phone...

That crossing has always been rough as guts and its a bit of a disgrace to have such a crossing on sh1

With little sidewall strength I don't see the benefit of balloons and smaller wheels? Will still be down two tyres with the chance of your 14x10 rim getting damaged when the sidewall disappears and it hits the dirt :(

There's no easy way to take a photo of that crossing, no footpath access to either side, so I didn't take a photo.

I will make a couple of phone calls though, and see where that gets me (probably nowhere).

For the cost of a couple of tyres it's not worth the effort to fight, but at least I can kick over a few rocks.

Tyres were properly inflated too, I pumped them up last night in preparation for the trip.

Thanks for the input though guys, cheered me up after having my snow trip ruined :)

14x10's don't belong on the road imo. I'm not saying they don't look good. Sensible sizes with a sidewall for me though plz.

Ok, well lets say 14x7" then. Width of rim had nothing to do with what I was trying to say.

Taller sidewalls act as more of a cushion, so can absorb bigger impacts than a 205/40/17 for example

wtf? How could a larger sidewall NOT help save your rims? There is a much bigger cushion of air before the rim gets close to the road

I was more so saying that it's not guaranteed to avoid damage that's all.

Been in the same situation (in Auckland). The short story is, I was told that if my car had been running the stock tyre sizes I would have driven over the bad patch of road without bending a lip like the other thousands of cars that drove over the same patch of road every day without damage.

They had no intention of paying for damage that was caused (in their opinion) by my vehicle being modified. Just a heads up.

They probably have the form on the computer. Did they have wheels that aren't 100% factory? Yep, send this form to deny all responsibility.

Not worth it of course, but I would have thought if you lawyered up, you could fight that reasoning. If not, they you shouldn't have to pay the tax to maintain the roads, surely :lol: They happily take the tax from petrol used by cars running those wheels. But aren't responsibly to keep the road to a standard that lets the car drive safely.

They're probably banking on the fact that fighting it will almost always cost more than the wheels that are bent/broken in the first place.

Tyres are filled with air... air compresses, given a decent obstacle and sufficient impact you can chip/fold any rim because tyres and air aren't some magical fairy $&#$% thing.
