Yeah, magic and shit. But seriously, it's going to take a LOT to compress the side wall of a 18" tyre enough to even get close to the wheel itself 8O You can drive around on a "flat" 18" tyre and not even spot it easily, they don't exactly flex all that easily.

Tyres are filled with air... air compresses, given a decent obstacle and sufficient impact you can chip/fold any rim because tyres and air aren't some magical fairy $&#$% thing.

Sadly.

Bend - yes. Buckle - yes. "Taking a chunk out" - find that hard to believe unless the mag made contact with something.

Its made of a soft ali it'll bend, its made of a harder ali it'll crack/break. Either way you've exceeded its yield stress and it's stuffed.

seems to be the trend with railway lines in the waikato. the one on kahikatea drive (sh1) hamilton is shite too. Try driving over them in a van, eyes nearly rattle outta my sockets.

The one on te kowhai road is worse, The c**ts were there fixing shit a few months ago. But they left the crossing completely alone.... Its so bad there is actual holes where the sleeper used to be.

That road is shit and getting shittier. Te Ohaaki Rd it is and it still takes you into Huntly but not on the main side of the town.

Hmm... that seems a very indirect route to take. Is it actually faster? Bearing in mind I travel south to the mountain around 10 times during winter, and usually through that part of the country just before dawn where frost, fog etc would be a concern?

Never had frost/ice problems down there. Mainly flooding in the wet seasons.

There's often less traffic on them roads but can be a few trucks.

From turning off of SH1 to Huntly (via Te Ohaaki Rd) it's pretty straight and plenty of safe passing opportunities.

Huntly to Ngaruwahia (via River & River View Rd) is a very windy road which is fun but not many passing opportunities.

Playing the devil's advocate here to a certain extent - can imagine how annoying this would be... but in response to people saying that the NZTA/Council/Kiwirail should pay, I would assume the fact that you are meant to slow down to the point that you are able to stop if you need to would put to rest any chances of any legal claim in this instance. If you were following the letter of the law you wouldn't be driving over railway tracks at 50 - 60 kph.

That would tend to apply only to uncontrolled crossings, otherwise bells and barrier arms extend your warning window.
