I dont think the problem with my car us octane related though since running 98 produced the exact same results. someone suggested trying a hotter sparkplug. Thoughts on that?

If the it is pinking, the last thing you want to do is turn up the boost.
The hotter sparkplug will potentially cause more pinking (and detonation). Stick to the correct heat range (stock is the best, NGK BKR6EP-8 or ND PK20R8).

Pinking can caused by excessive carbon build up, incorrect ignition timing, incorrect air fuel mixture..

What spark plugs look like and what are they (ie are they correct)?

Not a lot. I believe timing is not adjustable, and mixture can be affected by fuelling issue (fuel pump/filter) or by sensor/ECU issue (which is normally picked up by ECU).

Are you sure it is pinking and not leaking exhaust manifold/turbo housing?

Plugs are probably original. They don't look too bad either. The oil on them is from leaking valve cover gasket.
Check for blackness under alternator.
