It's defo only an 86...but it may have the GT86 Aero kit, who knows why you'd do it!

Those brakes are awesome they cost heaps but I guess you wouldn't regret it if you were tracking your 86 alot.

The more I compare the 86 to GT86 the more I like the base model.

It's been said in this thread that the GT86 has the better interior. I disagree. I think the 86 is cleaner. It also doesn't have the fake carbon fibre trimming. And the gauges on the 86 look better imo.

GT has bigger brakes, but the 86's are still huge for the size of the car. I have no doubt that the GT's brakes are better, but when are you ever getting near the limits of the 86's brakes? I don't think I've ever needed better brakes that what most modern cars are fitted with.

The 86 has far better wheels. Be even better if they were 17's, but certainly more than liveable imo than the 17's the GT has.

GT has heated seats over the 86. My Audi has heated seats, and I know in that, that by time the heated seats are warm, the car is warm anyway.

The GT has dual zone climate, the 86 only get manual. Dual zone is great on road trips, especially as the fairer sex usually like it 2 - 4 degrees hotter.

That said, I only ever started using air-con in a car when I moved to Aussie. I used to always rip it out of sporty cars in Christchurch. Can't see myself doing that to this though.

The specs on ToyotaNZ imply that the manual 86 doesnt have body coloured bumpers or door handles? Can anyone confirm this?

For myself, if the cars were the same price, I would have a difficult time deciding between the two. For me, GT v 86, GT has dual zone and bigger (more than likely unnecessary) brakes, 86 has better interior and wheels that I don't feel like I have to replace the day I pick the car up.

86 might end up being seen as being the poor'er version but I couldn't give a rats about that. If I did, I wouldn't be looking at the 86 or GT86 at all.

86 is also 20kg lighter. Another plus.

I was expecting Corolla type seats in the 86, but they're actually bloody nice, hard to know how the pseudo suede will wear, but undoubtedly better than leather...

edit: and as already mentioned earlier in this thread, I can't imagine what you'd have to be driving like on the road to want bigger brakes...

For the sake of saving $5,000, not fussed about missing out on the extras AND having a quicker delivery, it's a no-brainer to go for the base 86. Especially if you're planning to mod it anyway.

Thats funny as prices vary I spoke to my Toyota dealer he thought he could accure this brake setup for $9.5 K through TNZ so I thought this is funny as Bowater quote $12.5 you have said 18 now this is a huge variance in price.

I've checked a few sites for similar Alcon Brembo AP Trust/Grex and alike and that 9.5 K isn't a bad price for that TRD 86 brake-kit.

Seats are ace and the same on both models.. I have $10k worth of Recaro's in my DD and they are no better IMHO, the seating position and low center of gravity helps a lot too. Would not be the best seat if you were a bigger bloke though, but to be fair you would not be comfortable in the 86 if you were a fat person.

Just went and drove the 86 myself.

Its just as you would expect it to be. It's definitely a drivers car, and you need to appreciate that. I think alot of people will complain that the car is underpowered, but I think that they are missing the point.

One thing I will say is that if you are a similar size as myself (6'3" 100kgs) you are pushing the comfort envelope of this car.
Don't get me wrong, I've driven less comfortable/tighter JDM cars. I would compare the driving position to be tighter than a S15 silvia. Similar to a S13 similar, but still a bit tighter. Not as tight as a GT starlet.
And there isn't a lot that could be done about it. The seat was hard back, and it would've been great if it went back another notch or two, but it was already hitting back seat. It was also as low as it could go.

Speaking of back seat, its more a handbag/jacket shelf. Its not a seat really. You would need a small person in the front just to get a small person in the back. No differnt to a lot of JDM coupes.

The steering wheel is telescopic, but it doesn't come out far enough for my liking. With it at full reach, it gets in the way of leg when attempting any heel/toe action. Not that I will be doing this in this car, but just as ome info for others.

With all that, I still bought one. I have still not decided on the colour, grey is my preference, then white or black. I want the grey if its the right grey, but I have seen pics on the net of grey ones and some pics show a hint of blue in it, which I'm not keen on. Dealer is trying to locate a grey one within the Toyota network that they can send me pics of it in different light.

Wait time, Feb 2013, regardless of which of my colours I decide on.

I managed to get a TRD price list from them. They wouldn't send it to me electronically, and only gave me a low quality print out. I've scanned it as best I could.

Congrats! Very exiting, I know what it like to wait for a new car and it is hard, especially when you have never seen one.

You go the GT or 86??

Those TRD parts look spendy.

I think the wheels are a reasonable price my 17'x 9.5' TE37SLs were more expensive than those TRD wheels.

Also as mentioned that big brake kit isn't as overpriced as everyone is thinking the Alcon AP and Grex kits are very similar price also.

I have already priced up some 18" 8.5 and 9.5 te37SL's and they are less than the TRD units, not more. Not by much, the are still over 4k.

17's can be had for mid 3k.

I got a MT 86. Not too many of those parts I would be interseted in. Maybe some of the chassis stuff, but I would only value some of those parts at half what is listed above.
