I seen a really nice black ft86 head into Miles here in Christchurch yesterday, had some aftermarket black wheels on it.
Even the plain non body kit 86 looks good with decent wheels.

Boy I hope Miles are a bit more selective with how far they let the Novus drivers take their next demo for a port hills special stage......................
Please leave these cars intact people, there's no needing destroying them so early on, atleast in standard spec.

Anyone else read this month's "Motor" magazine? It's got their annual Bang For Your Buck challenge, they use a preformance vs price formula to compare both the FT86 GTS and the Subaru BRZ against a whole other raft of cars:

Chrysler SRT8
BMW 1M
VW Scirrcco R
Renault Megane RS265
Mini Coupe
BMW Z4 28i
BMW125i
Ford G6 Ecoboost
VW Polo GTI
Audi A1 Sportback
Skoda Fabia RS
Fiat Abarth 500
Ford Focus Sport
Suzuki Swift Sport
Honda CR-Z
Hyundai Veloster

Makes interesting reading anyway

I was reading a British mag with a review on the BZR/FT86. The put it up against a WRX, 1998 possibly earlier, can't quite remember. They came to the conclusion to basically save your money and buy a WRX/STI and go have fun.
They also put it up against the MX5 and 370Z (all 3 were the same price over there) and they chose the MX5 and the 370Z over the BZR/FT86.
Interesting.

Mainly down to lack of power from memory. They loved the mx5, the best.
I guess you have to remember that these car mags do the writeups with stock standard cars.
I think I would have chosen the mx5 personally as well. Good looking car, with heaps going for it.
Also interesting to see the price difference with cars here and overseas. Seems we get shafted most of the time.

Interesting.

that was EVO mag, I read it each month. The car in question was a 1996 UK turbo. Only 218hp. They basically said that the handling and "funness" of the brz was awesome but that it just didnt have enough power to exploit the chassis. I have read several reviews which all say the same thing. Also with the 370z and mx5 comparison they said the 370z was much harder and faster and that the equation of lightness and handling was better done by the mx5 as it was much light (around 100-150kg) with the same power level in real life.

I don't know that I agree with the mx5 comment but I do feel the brz 86 needs to be more powerful or at least live up to its stated power figure.
More than a few mags have dynoed the brz and found power levels in the 105-115kw atw range. Which is almost exactly what you get from a current model mx5 which is only "rated" at 168hp.

I'm not trying to say that the GT86 is a bad car, just that we have seen that the japanese motor industry has been capable of making powerful 2l engines for a long time, I just don't understand why this engine was so underpowered. it just doesnt make sense.

Perhaps a motor and loom swap from a WRX or STI would be a reasonably cheap solution? I know the motors drop straight in. Would assume the plugs and loom would be quite different.

Or you could buy a brand new WRX for the same money as the GT86 and not have to take the brand new car you just paid the better part of 50k on to bits.

Or you could buy the one that suits your style best. As for me, I think I'll get an MX5 soon. Will match my salmon colour polos nicely Image

yeah in the same way that black tops make 165hp lol.

The average 86 makes 110kw atw.

The average ITR makes 125-135kw atw.

Thing is, the 86 could make 80kw and I'd still love it. It looks DAM nice and apparently handles better than pretty much anything in the FR genre.

yes but itr most likely puts more power to the ground as there are more drivetrain losses in a rwd car

the new 86's seem to run high 14's and the itr runs low 14s. Yes some drivetrain difference but also some real world differences. Were they both new and the same price which would I buy? The 86 hands down!

Also I wouldnt touch an NZ new 2.5 wrx with a ten foot poll. Massive engine issues. Don't want to derail the thread though so pm me if you want details.
