Saw another one of these during the week, do want. I think the road to Akaroa ~20km of winding hills would be the perfect setting too.

My old ITR dynod at 130kw. I get the feeling it would smoke an 86 in a straight line which is a bit of a let down really.

They certainly have the look right, just in factory form they could really do with another 100hp.

yes you will. i test drove it 1st day it came out and it is nothing special unfortunately. i even thought to myself, even my automatic K20A honda stream accelerates harder and faster :wink:

the 86 suppose to resurrect the nostalgic memory and recapture the excitement of the old 86 , but i think they failed big time. you can't recapture that moment again with an engine that doesn't sound like a toyota engine, with an engine that is not even a toyota

if you want to do this, you need to at least have the original TOYOTA motor - may be a revised version of 3SGE (3SGTE would be even better), 4AGE (4AGZE would be better) and/or even the 1ZZ 1.8 celica motor (motor might be too small for the body)

Twice I've gone onto Ngauranga Gorge motorway and seen or driven passed a white 86. Really like the look of them.

I see STM have bought one. I wonder if they will retune the standard engine to see if there is anything else in it or if they will go straight to add on forced induction kits, as a demo car for products they can supply.

I wonder if they can be reflashed like most subie ecu's
EX:89 RS and GT Legacys, 90 EF9 Civic, 95 Integra R, 95 AE101, 90 ST185, 88 Accord, 87 3rdoor and 5door Swift hatch, 91 Pontiac Lemans, 80 Liftback Celica, 95 Hornet 250

Looks like a lot of them need reflashing anyway

The talk is that the reflashing is doing bugger all, oil pressure control stuff and cam gears are getting replaced and having no change on things, hundreds of people having the running issues.

first runs at models often have issues, so probably not a huge surprise.

Have to say, after watching the STM vid of them testing the GT86 on track in stock form I was very very impressed, it actually doesnt look slow at all, was moving up through the gears nicely. Could always use another 20-30 hp so you feel that real NA scream at the top end it would be perfect. I am seriously wondering how fast these will depreciate and wether in a years time they will be much cheaper. I am just blown away after seeing this thing on the track in NZ.

edit* just read about the problems, that kinda sucks. Maybe they should have used a toyota engine but none that would suit spring to mind really.

Issue is coming up because alot of people arent running them in correctly

I know a guy in oz with one and hes had no issues at all apart from having a minor accident in the wet with tc off lol

Yeah but seems a bit weird for a car to basically pack a sad if you suddenly drive it a little differently than you have in the past.
Obviously whoever designed it never thought about the possibility that multiple people might drive it when its new, or that people might drive it differently at different times. Or even perhaps get stuck in traffic, after just taking it for a fang.

Hopefully they'll come up with a durable situation in a reasonably quick period of time.

What the toyota rep stated in the article is utterly stupid.
No-one would make an ECU that would adjust itself for first 100km and them permanently lock itself in.
What I think, the Subaru has no idea what the problem is, and Toyota just relaying what Subaru knows, which is nothing. Now, non-mechanical PR/Management type is translating whole bunch of maybes into something that they think people would understand.
Most likely everything is Subaru designed, so the ECU should be re-flashable. There is possibility in software glitch where it could cause mechanical damage (hence replacement of bits), but I haven't seen any photos of the mechanical damage yet.
Most of dealerships that deal with this issue simply are not trained to deal with it, especially Toyota, since everything is inside is Subaru.
