Another what car to get thread

Postby thornz » Tue Oct 02, 2012 8:04 pm

So, bought my Legacy 3.0R last year which I love to bits. However since the baby has arrived it has pretty much become the wifes car, as it has the room for a baby seats/strollers and all the other baby crap. This in turn has meant I hace been relegated to the VW Polo.

The polo is actually fine for the drive to work as its filthy cheap on gas, however I now need something I can use for towing a trailer, which TBH, 1.4l of fury just isnt really enough......

So thinking of getting rid of the polo and getting something thats more suited to towing, or even a ute of some sort. Needs to be cheapish, prob 7k tops, and pretty good on gas ideally as I travel a bit each day to get to work, and then any trips towing bikes in the weekend etc, so was thinking a diesel of some sort could be the way to go?

First thought was a Hilux, but for that money it would pretty much be a very early 90's with high kms, but would prefer something slightly newer if possible, or are high km hiluxs still a great buy? I know they have a awesome repuatation, but still when your looking at 300kms on them, surely they are going to require quite a bit of maintenence to keep them running?

What are some other solid light utes to consider, or anything else thats cheap on gas and worth looking at that is suitable for towing?

Put towbar on the Legacy and use that when you need to tow?

Unless you just want an excuse to spend some money on another car and wish us proles to tell you how to spend your own money 8)

Have a towbar on the Legacy, but baby seat really doesnt particualary fit in the Polo even with teh seat forard , so sort of need something else to have so the wife can still have a car to use.

Just bikes on the trailer? What about a Carib or something like that? Or give her the Carib and you can tow more with the Subby

As above, depending on what you're towing it might make more sense just to get her something else rather than yourself.

Perhaps not a bad idea. Just towing a couople of dirt bikes and the odd load of landscaping, house stuff etc.

Subaru should do that. Now you've just narrowed it down to a spacious car for the kids
