Can I grind on this ???

I'm critically short of room for fitting a filter to my ITB's, and
need to know if it is possible to grind away the extra knob on
the end of the clutch master cylinder (AE86).

Being able to use the extra 5mm I would get by grinding that
piece flat, would make all the difference. It kind of looks like
it is a boss that would be used if the clutch tube came out thru
the end, rather than out the side. So maybe it is solid ? And I
could grind it off without creating a leak ?

Any insight gratefully received :)

Pop the guts out of it and check the depth? Or is it still in the car? Actually I may have one in the cupboard I can check

Doesn't actually want to come apart ? The rubber cap and rod
etc comes off easy enough, but the spring-loaded push/piston
rod does not fall out. The rod just snaps back and hits a stop,
as if it had been pressed in as an assembly.

Didn't want to risk munting it as it is brand new. I had a dead
one, but threw it out during a cleanup a while back :roll:

Will most likely be a circlip or something holding all the piston assembly in. If you disassemble the whole thing you could measure it and find where it all bottoms out.

In saying that removing any metal would be messing with the integrity of the housing, what's it made out of?

Original one is made of cast iron. I expect the new one is the
same. I'll have another shot at getting it apart tomorrow.

To the bottom of the hole that's the reservoir port, not just the bore's end.

Also, that's not a boss for a different outlet. Only cylinders with a piston controlled port that will have their reservoir in the middle can have an outlet at their end.

Measured the master in the pic, and got 122 mm overall and
114 mm to the end of the reservoir port. That leaves a difference
of 8 mm worth of iron, so I figure I can safely take 5 mm off the
end. It's not like there is a lot of pressure involved in a clutch
hydraulic system.
