I found it underpowered but so was the original. I think the main focus is the handling not lots of kilowatts. Power tends to get in the way of the car/driver interface. More fun to drive a slow car quickly and all that.

Yeah 3S swap doesnt make any sense.

Take out a 200hp engine for another one that's heavier?

2GR would suit it nicely!

Or the subaru flat 6.

If it's anything like an MX5 (i.e. lowish power but low weight) then its fast as long as you aren't watching the speedo.

If you want more power but don't want to upset the balance etc... I read that the wrx and sti motors drop straight in. Probably quite straight forward, and I'm sure there would be some plug and play ecu out there by now.

Went for a wee blat in an is-f today and it got me thinking they should do an "FX-GT86" with that engine.
big(ish) V8 + small sportscar = win.

Also 90k is a hell of a lot of coin for a 2nd hand fancy toyota 8O

Car of the year

Postby ae82 gt 4 us » Thu Dec 13, 2012 12:00 pm

86 Just claimed car of the year, also got Jeremy Clarkson's car choice for 2012.
Lets see what they can achieve in NZ as race cars to claim all bragging rights.

While IMHO JC's opinion is to be taken with a grain of salt, I cant see any other car that has been as impressive in 2012, there have been good cars but the 86 is just awesome in what it does and what it represents, its a breath of fresh air after a few dull years, it should claim car of the year from most publications.

Spotted a Silver one cruising down one of my favorit back roads the other weekend, on looks alone it can hold its head up, the low bonnet line and overall shape looks as good as any Porsche from 100m.

I want TRD86 with a Chev LS, a cage, some race seats for Targa, would be epic.

Still not that many around. TNZ on their Facebook site announced on 20 Dec that they had sold the 86th new 86 and then there's the 12 BRZs on top of that for a total of 98 New Zealand wide (excluding the dealer demos that are with dealers or may have now been sold).

Saw the TRD 86 today on the M/Way today.

The red brakes were really noticeable and the rear of the car looked good also as I drove by.

Assume that was me but could have been the white one from King Toyota.

Just got to the 1,600km so can open mine up now. Went by the book for run-in for the 5 year warranty.

On a car this light and without that much power I thought the brakes would be overkill (can't even wash between the callipers and the wheels they are so big in the 18" wheels) but they are primo. Can't wait for the next trackday at Manfeild to test them out properly.

Lots of talk about the lack of power but for a nanny driver like me there's plenty!

Here's a couple of pics from yesterday after I waxed her up!
