Hi there,

One of the small benefits to come out of my most recent post in the tech section is the wife is rather keen on me replacing the celsior with something newer/more sensible.

Requirements:

- $10-$15k price bracket for 2004+ less than 110,000kms
- Good guts for overtaking but good fuel economy, hopefully 9L/100kms when nana-ing it
- Excellent reliability & Safety
- Cruise control

I have narrowed it down to Legacy or Accord Euro Tourer

How are the honda 2L/2.4L engines?
How are the Subaru 2L/2.5L/3L engines?

Any suggestions on which ones are the ones to buy?

The subaru 3litre would be my pick but it wont average 9l/100km more like 11l/100km around town.(I have an 2002 3litre legacy)

I'd stay away from awd + auto especially if there's a turbo involved.

My flatmate just purchased a Accord Euro wagon, beautiful to drive in, plenty of power and he got 700+kms on a tank (Around $120 to fill). The interior is very nice and comfortable and the factory stereo is awesome.

Only downside is that the backside is bloody ugly.

ok, noted - thanks mate - you've heard of issues etc? I would have thought Subaru would be pretty good at that by now? Keen to hear anything you've heard

It sounds like fuel economy is pretty close to your heart and awd auto wagons are horrid. I'd look at the Accord a bit closer if I was in your situation. I havent heard of much going wrong with them aside from wear and tear and you certainly don't see the word 'rebuilt' in the onkine auction descriptions anywhere near as often as you do certain others.

cant run on 91!, 95 or 98 only. Heaps of power and torque tho. I also haven't heard anything earth shatteringly bad about the 2.5ltr

the accord 2.4 makes 140kw and goes pretty dam well having driven the sedan a few times.

If it were me I would go for the 3.0 legacy as they look great are chain driven (no cam belts to change) and have decent interiors/sound systems from factory and seem to be pretty solid as jack of all trades cars

Plus you could pick up a really nice one for less than 15k

ive got an NZ new Accord Euro sedan with the 200HP 2.4L. Plenty of power and good economy. Wouldnt bother with the jap import 2.0L or the lower end 2.4L engines, too much weight, too little power.

The K24A engines are chain driven, but recommend 95 octane minimum.

just to throw a spanner in the works. Have you thought about a rav4? the newer shape comes with the 125kw 2.4 camry engine and you could get one within 15k. I have rented one for a trip to qtown and with 3ppl and luggage it passed easily. I know its not a wagon but it does everything a wagon would do. the newer 2003+ shape also looks the biz too.

i'd be into the accord myself. wouldnt expect too many issues with either car at those kms and age.

have you had a good drive of both? i personally find the honda a lot nicer to drive / nicer inside etc. but thats largely a matter of taste.

I would stay away from anything 2AZFE powered due to headbolt thread weakness.

I'd go the Honda Euro Wagon, they are impressively good on gas considering the practicality and performance - suffice to say they go fairly nicely, and are an overall quite nice car.

oh, my bad I must have been thinking of another 2.5. and Yes the 2.5 4 cylinder subie engines are terrible in pretty much all forms.
