Whats my car worth

Postby siren676 » Sat Jan 05, 2013 10:07 pm

Got taken for a spin in a drift car today and its made my mind up that the starlet has to go so I can focus on the mx5 build.
I'm not sure what its worth so need some help getting a ball park figure.
Its got quite a few mods done to it but they probably won't help on its value.
Chassis has done 270,000k's, 5efhe has done 180,000. Numerous handling mods and glanza v body kit.

Friends think its worth around $4-5000 although I'm not sure if that'd be right.

How tidy is it? Maybe $3500 to the right person?

I must be old, but I won't buy a modified car, IMO they are worth much, much less.

Its got a few supermarket dings from when I was working at countdown. Otherwise all the paints the same colour. Just needs a bit of detailing to remove green pine tree pollen in the tight places.

I'd pay $2500 as is. If you could get someone to look past the high mileage and obvious thrashing that its' had, maybe $3000 or just over. You can get the same thing standard and with half the km on trademe for not much more.

Just don't $1 reserve it, I've seen that go wrong too many times.

Certed? Those sort of k's and modified I would expect closer to $2k. I always presume modded cars have been thrashed simply because most have been.

Yeah certed for all mods. New engine hasn't had a chance to be thrashed as I got the mx5 shortly after getting it certed.

In hindsight I should have stopped spending money on it ages ago. But hindsights a bitch

spending money on cars, especially mods, is almost always money down the drain.

think of it as entertainment budget.

i also think around 2-2500, maybe 3 for the right person.

most of your typical starlet buyers are going to be put off by the mods, and those that want performance will be looking at GTs imo.

you might do better to put stock suspension back in if you have it, and keep quiet on the engine swap?

I have to agree that the mods will make it hard to sell.

I think I'll have to aim for $4k but be happy with $3k.

Im wanting to get enough so I can get a supercharger kit for the mx5

And thats exactly why I have kept every single factory part thats been removed from my car over the years, so if the unforseeable should happen, and I was forced to sell the car, it would be returned to 100% stock for an easier sale, and then I would onsell all the aftermarket parts for some extra cash.

I thought you said earlier in the thread you'd learnt your lesson about flushing $$$ down the toilet

I'd wager a supercharger setup would set you back more than you'll sell the Starlet for.

Keep it. Especailly because you are modding another car. A 5efe starlet is an excellent daily while doing a project.

alot of GT and Glanzas on TM for around the same figure you are aiming for, some even less

kinda falls out of a few desireable catergories

too modded for the average grandperson
not modded enough for the hoon head

but hopefully you will find someone whos sweet spot it hits

also like someone jus said, good to have a daily whilst the project is out of action.

swap it for a good tow vehicle, never know when you may need one for your MX5

Yup, she will be not a very easy car to sell. You'll get $2500 ish for it I'd guess.

Take off and sell as much aftermarket stuff as you can abandon put it back to as close to standard as you can. Did it with my fielder and ended up making more than I was asking in the first place.

Can't really sell bits off or it no longer matches the cert plate so is worth even less.

Except it has an engine swap on the cert plate, so you would need to remove that too.

Sounds like it might not be worth selling with all the mods, time & effort you've put into it. I've had the sense that you like driving it too and it's been a really good car for you - so I'd have a serious think about whether you want to part with it, especially for $3k-ish.

What we did with my GF's car when we were younger is work out what we needed to sell it for and listed it on Trademe for that price ($6k). Only two people ever looked at it and the second person bought it. It must have been on Trademe for a good 5 months but we weren't in a rush and it still a reliable car that did what it needed.

There is no one harder to bargain with then someone who's not desperate to sell their car, espeically when you really want it.

nice little car, if i was buying it, i would start at 3k and then go backwards from there as i nitpick its flaws

i'd forgive u for small flaws if it had coilovers, or fresh brakes/tyres, things like that are good value in my books

pod filter, exhaust, china bov, front mounts, rangimods, things like that can f*ck right off
