Re: So, what's Aussie like for cars then?
Because I like resusitating threads more than three years old lol
Funny how life doesn't go the way you expect... Still in Sydney. Got a car as taking the bus was shit, and I had better things to do on the weekends I have the kids with me. Took everything I knew about looking for and buying cars, and threw it out of the window (not that my car buying was ever that flash lol). I really miss my Caldina lol
Anyhoo, I bought a ZZE122 Toyota Corolla 2004 wagon.

Insurance is bend you over a table expensive, car average. Making the best of it lol Have a pile of minor niggles to sort out, although a suspect gearbox mount and steamclean of the interior is around the top of my list

Shop around for insurance. My MPS is less than $1k p/a to insure (comprehensive) which is on par/cheaper than some of the cars I owned in NZ
Faber est suae quisque fortunae
2009 Mazda3 MPS
2016 CFMoto 650NKs
2013 Hyundai IX35 Highlander

Wagon + parked on street + demerit pints + $$$ lol I used a low k's policy to pay $550ish for fully comp, the Green slip though cost $685 - ouchy
Tempted to do a 'laugh at my PoS' project thread, the list is varied lol
* Steam clean interior
* Replace fuel filter
* Replace gearbox oil, check mounts as there is a 'ponk' noise changing in and out of gear when accelerating/constant speed (but not when slowing down)
* Replace lower gearbox bushing as gearchange tad sloppy
* Get Remote module from wreckers and spare keys for remote locking
* Replace driver seatbelt
* Unlock Toyota stereo from HELP mode (or replace it), source aerial from wreckers as mine is missing - get to remove roof lining - yay!
* Investigate why rear washer jet isn't working
* Get weather shields / monsoon visors from wreckers
* Get headlights polished up, headlight shields
* Tint windows
* Fog lights / relay / stalk switch
* Factory roof racks if I can be arsed finding at wreckers / removing / installing them
Have already replaced boot struts and installed cabin filter
My plan is to drive it until it dies, then replace motor/gearbox, rinse and repeat. New life as single dad in sydney means dreams of a porsche in driveway are on hold for now

Referring back to the first few comments in this thread, I've also found that cars over here tend to be in far better general condition than back home in Auckland. You don't see so many $800 cars with $5000 sets of chrome rims
Far more Euro's here than in NZ too, and they're getting more popular by the day with the local manufacturers closing up shop.
I've got to admit, my views on cars have changed a fair bit since moving over here in 2011. I've been through a VR SS V8, an Evo 7, a XR6 Turbo (sedan), and now driving a Renault Megane RS250 Trophee. After hating on Euro's for years, the Renault is now one of my favourite cars to date; mint interior, comfy as hell, leather Recaro bucket seats, mechanical LSD and perfohub in the front, handles brilliantly (as far as FWDs go), and is faster than the mildly modified Evo. The Evo was 195kw atw @ 19psi, the Renault is currently 188kw atw @ 22psi, but weighs about 200kg less. The XR6 was a huge $$% fail, and I got rid of it after only 3 months.
Having said all that, I've also swapped to two wheels recently, and the Renault has been driven about twice in the last two months
It only gets used when it's raining, and when I need to do shopping that won't fit in my backpack >_<

Lane splitting is lyfe!
Rode up Sunshine Coast on the weekend, and hit some heavy motorway traffic on the way back (people are retarded and slow right down for standing traffic cameras instead of just driving passed at the speed limit
