1NZFE engine noise

Having done around 2000km in the RunX now, I've noticed that the engine is quite noisy under moderate/heavy acceleration, almost sounds like badly adjusted tappets, dry bearing or chain noise.. it has only done 50kms however so I wouldn't imagine that something would have failed this early?

I assume there are other 1NZFE owners here, are they quite a noisy engine? Could it possibly be too thin engine oil perhaps?

Mine does sound like piston rattle when cold and under load (similar to bottom end noise but more frequent, quieter and more tinny). It goes away once hot.
It is also generally noisy (chain and cam rattle), but I think it is normal.
It does not help that the inlet manifold is plastic and you hear a lot of valve/induction/hissing noise through that as well.

It always been like that since I had it (got it at 60k, now 100k), it is clean inside (so no sludge), I run 0W40 (I tried 10W40, and 5W30, no difference to noise).

BTW, there is no such thing as too thin oil, especially on cold. Even 0W is way too think at 40'C.

Eventually I might get myself around replacing chain tensioner as preventative/maintenance thing ( I am waiting for gaskets/seals leaking)....

They are quite noisy, I know our bB was quite rowdy but I think as Sergei mentioned, the plastic manifolds make them noisier.

Thanks guys, I took a couple of workmates for a fang tonight and they didn't think it was too bad and seemed normal.. I also spoke to an ex-Toyota mechanic, he said that it may be a characteristic of that engine which you've pointed out!

have driven one from 0 -140,000k as a company car, pretty much same deal as what everyone said above
