It's doubtful any of you would know that the late Willie Rutherford (a Pom recently resident in Canterbury) was, in the 70's & 80's, a factory supported Mazda driver in the UK.
He got his start in the rally business driving an RX3 Coupe from which he'd removed the rotary and installed a BDA, stating at the time "nobody's ever done anything with a rotary".
Of course back in NZ we were all outraged yelling into our CCC magazines ... "never heard of Rod Millen or John Woolf you plonker?"

I actually rallied both an RX2 & RX3 Coupe in the early 80's so I'm not totally anti the rotary, but you shouldn't strap one in a real car.

That said, Joe you've obviously forgotten that Marcus actually won Otago last year in the GrpB RX7.

there's a couple of really nice RX(various) rally cars around :)

Whilst I love the sound of the BDA, I have to say that I can see why people do the FJ repower considering the rather eye watering cost of buying and running the genuine engine. It's the difference between "OW!" and "OOOWWWW!!!".

Rally costs bazillions as it is, I dont see a problem with allowing similarish engines to repower the older cars if it brings down the costs a bit.

I'd rather see someone wailing on an engine they have two or three spares of (or can rebuild/replace easy)

Rather than someone being a nana at 7/10ths because they're scared to blow up their $$$$$$$$$$$$$ impossible to replace engine that they had to steal from a museum.

in Neals case it is a good fit, as essentially the 18RG race motor (152e??) was the 3SG precurser.
unsure on the speaking too highly of FJ20, i heard from a reliable source, Derek could have bought a BDA with the deveolopment costs to get it going as good as it does, and i can't imagine it being super easy to get essential parts (crank/heads etc) these days.

yes i did, Bruce...... bit excited to see a decent marque at the top of the timesheets, and forgot about the chicken cookers success, but full credit to him, even though one could build 2 REAL cars for what i was told his build cost was
