3L 2.8D by the fact he said LN130 straight after...

And yes gutless, but never seem to break compared to pretty much every other option.

of course, i bet that is what he means. They are a good motor, but primitive and as you say , fairly slow. I hadn't really considered the 2.8 litre diesel.

Awesome work horse and can't really go wrong with them. Just can't go fast with them either! Turbo kit or supercharger goes well on them, but it would be cheaper and simpler to just get a 1K model

3RZ would be the only option I would consider personally. Such a strong motor that never seem to give any trouble. Had a couple now, plus a 2RZ in a Hiace & never spent a cent on anything that wasn't routine maintenance.

Tow the occasional car with my brothers one (2wd Hilux) and it handles it easily, towed the AE86 500Kms last weekend and did it comfortably.

yes i'm a fan of the 3rz. 3RZ surfs start at 9 grand (1997 368000km) and go up and up from there- more commonly 14-15k.
if only they had put the 2jzge in them...instead of those v6 options:)

'4runners' are a ln130 with the 2.8D. iirc. No electrics to speak of... except for the rear wind up window... which funnily enough always breaks.

Truth. They certainly aren't gutless, pulled a caravan stuck in a creek out after a big flood (every other 4wd there had a crack, landies, rodeos, etc.). But if speed isn't a selling point (didn't see it listed) then bang for buck. You can't go wrong. Never had to turn a spanner on the engine, just replace consumables and with 90% of the joints grease-able, that's a rare thing. Even in sub 0 temps (i go boarding a lot) still starts first turn.

Hmm.. Another project, Blake? (2jzge wouldn't be hard to find) ;)

Any suggestions for suitable mechanics to do pre purchase inspection of a Surf in the One Tree Hill area( I guess that means penrose, greenlane, onehunga, Mt albert, epsom, ellerslie, remuera- are they considered 'closeby' ?)
This thread has been very helpful by the way, guys. thanks.

BIG Thanks to all contributors to this thread.
