Mixing MT-90 and Lightweight shockproof

Postby cat007 » Sat May 11, 2013 6:06 pm

Hey all

I've just drained the Gulf Western gear oil from my W55 as it's GL5 and that's apparently bad for synchro's.

I bought 2 quarts of MT-90 this morning as from what I've read the W55 calls for 1.8 Litres. But after reading the link below - it turns out I need 2.7 quarts (2.6Litres).

I have about 3/4 a bottle of Redline Lightweigh Shockproof - just wondering if I can mix the two so I end up with the 2.7 quarts that's called for?

I would like the car going this weekend - and I can't find anywhere open that'll sell me another quart of MT-90 - hence the mixing question....

I wouldnt. I'd sooner ask someone here if they have a bottle of MT90 you can have and replace it during the week.

Bugger - thanks for that.

Does anyone have a bottle of MT-90 I can have and replace next week - or buy off you?

Cheers

As far as I remember, lightweight shockproof is just MT90 with a friction modifier added. (You can actually buy the friction modifier on its own to add to the MT90 to feel the difference).

That said, the friction modifier apparently isn't good for brass Synchro's, though I'm not sure what kind of synchros the W55 uses...

So, it should be fine to mix them. But as others have said, don't mix them if you can help it.
Cheers,
Brandon

Found someone who had a bottle of MT-90 lying around so grabbed that and will buy him a replacement.
