BZ Touring. Manual conv. Pulling to the left under acc. help

So just finished putting the car back together after replacing the auto box with a c56 lsd box.

Car is a 97 Corolla BZ Touring. Still running the auto ecu (how do i get rid of the lashing OD light?)

Car had some 130,000km new box 150,000km.

Just took it for a test drive and its wanting to dive for the ditch if i accelerate even just mildly.

The car had a wheel alignment 2 weeks ago.

Any ideas? :cry:

The only suspension/steering thing undone was the lca to ball joint nuts and bolts so I could remove the axles.

Engine mount wise:

Drivers side = no change

Front = Used the auto one

Rear = Bracket off a 6 speed manual. Mount auto one.

Passengers side. = Modified 6 speed bracket mounted to auto mount.




The gearbox maybe sounds a bit noisy.



Just checked Tyre pressures all fine.

All wheels spin reasonably freely.



The pulling is to the point that at half throttle slowly taking off in first gear if I let go of the wheel I would be in the ditch in about 2 car lengths.

Does it only do it under power? Or will it do it if you're coasting in neutral and let go if the wheel?

Sounds to me like your wheel alignment is out.

Car has just been at the suspension shop for the afternoon.

They can't find anything wrong with the suspension.




Driving on a straight piece of road @ 100 kph.


In gear coasting it pulls to the left a little bit.
Braking and in gear about the same.


Accelerating it pulls hard to the left.


With the clutch in it tracks perfectly straight. Braking with the clutch in still goes straight.



Drivers side engine mount is no been changed. Front and back mounts are correct as per toyo diy.

Passengers side mount was modified as a factory mount does not exist for a 5 speed in a post 97.6 corolla.

When you swapped the driveshafts did you put the drivers side drive shaft support back on?

yeah, had plenty of fun with that. Originally tried to install the drive shaft with the auto bracet before realizing it wouldn't go in because I needed a manual bearing hanger bracket which is now installed.

pop the bonnet and rev the motor. What way is the motor twisting? Is the passenger side twisting forwards more than the drivers side?

It just slightly rocks back on forwards. Looking down is does not twist.

Where do I go from here? Do it try another gearbox?


Could it be axle related?

Could the engine mount I had to modify be causing all this? If the passengers side mount is too high or to low would this happen?


Looking up from the bottom of the car should the passengers side drive shaft be inline to the drivers side half shaft? (currently it points forwards a bit.)


Also did a skid in the paddock and it left two solid lines so both wheels are definitely being driven.

I've just purchased another gearbox I'll put it in on the weekend and see if that solves the problem.

answer this. What would you need to modify to get the passenger side half shaft going straight out the wheel, rather than angling forward slightly?

It maybe due to bracket/mount mismatch, specifically the auto mount on C160 bracket.
I know for a fact that C160 plate/bracket does not fit C5X. The bolt holes need to be redrilled in different location and some welding could be involved. Although I did the opposite (replaced C52 with C160), it still applies.

Have you tried using the mount that the C56 came with?
You can raid any AE101 for the C5X mount from pickapart, much cheaper than buying new gearbox.

The mount would have to move back close to an inch. But this is impossible as with the front and rear mounts it can't really be rotated. (The front and rear mounts are 1oo% correct.)



I removed the passengers side engine mount and connected the mount bracket to a chain hanging from above so there would be nothing stopping if from moving back and forwards. It stayed where it was.

The only movement really possible is up and down slightly at the gearbox end. Which i tried, changed toe mount to raise the gearbox end up by 10mm and it made no difference.

These mounts from a post 97.04 fz or xz levin should bolt up. (5 speed c series gearbox and would have the mount that bolts to the chassis rail)

Got a new engine mount and bracket from the wreckers and now its all 100% bolt up. The new mount dropped the gearbox end about 20mm.

All the bolts now slide through the holes with ease.

I have taken measurements of a car with the same motor and everything matches perfectly. Drive shafts of the car I compared too are at the same slight angle.


But the car still won't drive straight :evil:

Stab in the dark: perhaps one of the CV is seizing?

Or maybe the LSD in the C56 box is toast which might only show up on a surface with good traction as opposed to a paddock with no traction?
