Hiace van, factory water to air intercooler

Postby blackmk3 » Mon May 20, 2013 2:20 pm

So my father and i have 2002 Hiace Vans as workvans, The last of the older shapes before they changed to the current shape.

There both "supercustoms" so have 1KZ-TEs in them and are autos, with factory water to air intercoolers, i understand how water to air systems work, But more in a aftermarket sence (Stuffing around with various cars in various setups) but never on a factory fitted vehicle

The issue we have is one of the vans has started getting really gutless, usually flys up hills but now is struggling, after a big drive up hills etc i pulled over and checked the W2A radiator in behind the bumper, Dead cold.
So leading me to think that the systems not working, the vehicle has done 240,000kms

Ive checked the water level but as yet this is all, So the question is, how do these systems trigger the pump? temp sensor someware?
Is there some way of starting the pump through the diogonisitic plug? or some other way for testing?

Thanks very much
Nick

Most likely brushes on the pump has failed.
Check if there is voltage on the pump, once the van has been warmed up and driven. The pump does not operate all the time (the I/C control unit turns it on depending on load, temperature and speed of the vehicle).

If there is no voltage disconnect plug on the pump apply 12V directly and see if the is circulation going (the pump will be humming) - on celica circulation is visible on from the pressure cap hole, not sure if it is possible to see it on the hiace.
The genuine Celica ST205 pump is about $150 or so, and is really beefy. so you could probably use that to replace, if the pump is faulty.

P.S. I never realized that supercustoms where water to air

Yep, im not aware of anything similar for decent money.. the much smaller bosch pumps or some rather expensive marine items..

How big is the pump on the Hiace? Photos plz OP! :)

1: Factory W2A on a hiace?? Whats the model code?
2: I doubt you would ever feel any heat in the heat exchanger, it works at much cooler temps than the engine radiator. If it is getting hot then it's hopelessly under capacity.

You could try running a couple of wires from the pump to a light yo can hold in the cabin to determine if and when the pump is getting a signal. Then if that checks out, apply 12v to the pump directly to see if the pump itself works

hmmm.. unless theyv done a big timing change because its got colder air going into it through the intercooler i cant see it being the problem.. iv got a 1kzte custom with no intercooler at all and it doesnt have any issues getting up hills...

what makes you think its the intercooler causing the lack of power?

What pointed me to the intercooler is it seems to suffer the symptoms of "heat soak". around town its fine with the normal turbo power surge, just seems to get worse and worse the more hills you go up, Im from taupo and usually notice it when doing callouts around the lake, towing trailers is terrible. Where the other van is totally identical shoots up the hills at 110kph and much better speeds with trailers on

i had a 1kzte surf once non intercooled and seems to run like that did after hard running, super hot intake temps

I havent put a boost guage or anything on it, but turbo sounds normal as it has done for the last 150,000kms of ownership gets serviced every 5000 etc etc etc

Ill look into checking out the pump, testing the pump is no worries ill go from there, otherwise could it be worn injectors? or?

Thanks for the advice everyone 8)
Ill take some pics for those interested

how many k's on it? how many have you done? checked your filters? Iv seen them carbon up the intakes and reduce air flow. might pay to check (or block off) egr as they can cause similar dramas.

Least the Supercustom pump is still available too :) Same price as the ST205 ones - $97.20

Similar size? I might have to acquire one for the spares box if its reasonably similar in size.

Priced up an ST185RC pump? They're almost identical to the ST205 one, might be still available too

So update!

Over the weekend had some time to look at the van
found the pump not running, took it out and stripped it apart, totally full of carbon dust from the worn brushes, with a blow down with compressed air the pump started and ran again

But the brushes are almost at there limits so ordered a new pump from toyota Part number 16290-67010 $130.00 arriving tommorow

But found another interesting little thing, This may help other 1KZ owners, i noticed while working on the vehicle (i also made a plate up and blocked off the EGR) that there was nasty leaking oil coming out of a little filter in the vacuum system it stops crap from getting into the turbo boost sensor and it had a nice big crack in the bottom of it, leaking air on boost. So im guessing this plus the lack of intercooling will bring the 1kz back to what it should be
Especially now the computer will actually be getting accurate boost readings

The filter is 23265 on toyodiy

Will update this with some pictures of the W2A system

Thanks very much for your help

oh well done, you will probly find the cracked boost feed to the boost sensor will be the majority of your issue. Theres also a small 'thimble' filter in the banjo fitting in the fuel feed ontop of the pump. they often get blocked and give issues like these. did u check fuel filter too?
