My old V4 STI was getting around 10L/100KM or better which is close, didnt think it was too bad for a 2LT 4WD

Nice looking cars those, can anyone tell me what you mean by radar cruise control?

hmm maybe its time to do something about the bung o2 sensor in mine then :D

What version do you have? Ours was a V4 STI and was stock including exhaust, O2 sensor would cause you economy issues I would assume.

Scary thing is that we now have an HX20 impreza that has similar fuel economy as the STI 8O

thats clever, I was either thinking this is what is as about or it dropped your speed with radar guns were detected (that would be handy)

When I was driving my sisters car is Aussie last week I used cruise control alot but it was a pain in the arse when people in front of you fluctuate their speed constantly, I guess this would be useful in that situation

Yes when following a car you can select the following distance and that will be maintained , also if the car in front stops it will apply the brakes ,start beeping , and stop you down to 30kph . Can take a bit of getting used to though ! It will also pretension the seat belts in extreme braking .

Electronics don't generally wear out like mechanics does.
This system is not add-on (like old cruise control used to be), it is part of ECU. What it means is that it does not use extra mechanical parts beyond extra solid state sensors.
It will be hooking into fly-by-wire and abs system for throttle and brake control. Just like stability and traction control in modern vehicles.

actually whats the fly by wire like?

you stomp foot and it gets up and goes? or takes a moment to contemplate life before jumping into action?

When my legacy had s buggered o2 sensor I was losing about 30km per tank so thats about 7% extra fuel.

it feels no different than normal throttle, unless you do stupid shit like pumping the gas, then it will filter it out completely (ie pumping normal throttle will cause car to jerk with throttle, while on fly-by-wire will have no effect what so ever).

The STI has different throttle/boost profiles as well, which changes the way the car behaves completely between each profile.
It can even feel like N/A car (in "I" mode).

Totally unrelated but on the RX8 throttle response is crazy quick. "Pumping" the throttle results in jerking.

Only gripe I have with it is looking at the throttle maps, it never gets 100% throttle. Peaks at 80-something from memory but I'll change that when I reflash.

The gearbox in the Master is 6 speed but is no LFA.

You can be cruising up a hill in 6th gear, decide to go for an overtake and it will take a little bit to change down enough gears. You can preempt this by using paddles to hold lower gears prior to needing the punch which works well. If it's in sport mode it will not shift up unless you tell it to, will bounce off the limiter which for some reason makes me happy.

Drive by wire is a non issue. As touched on by others it's an integral (and heavily, heavily tested) component of any modern car. The likelihood of the cruise control going wrong is extremely low. This is well proven technology by now :)

Worthy of note is traction control cannot be disabled, this is obviously for good reason because the 2gr will quite break traction in 1st/2nd on event slightly substandard surfaces.

Fuel economy alright, I get 450-480km's per tank (50L to fill from empty). This will increase substantially if you're spending any time cruising at open road speeds, mine is around town/stuck in traffic vast majority of the time. 100km/h is about 1900RPM in sixth gear.

Handling is more than adequate for a road car. Put decent tires on it and you're unlikely to run into its limits at sane speeds. I suspect putting it on the track would make very short work of the front tires however.

These things are very quiet at cruise. They have big thick carpet, sound insulation in the wheel wells and just generally feel good quality and well put together. Compare it to a falcon or commodore and it's laughable how cheap they feel.
