Hey guys,
Cousins looking at a couple of cars, an 02 ford mondeo and a 00 primera, both station wagons.
Taking price and kms out of the equation, what will be thought of to be the better car?
Anything to look out for if taking a look?
Any advice would be great.
Depends which model Primera... if it's the late one then avoid it, especially if it's CVT and/or direct injection. Plain old SR20 jobs that have been serviced properly should be fine. Check the engine for rattles.
Mondeo... well, it's a Mondeo. You'll get mixed opinions on them. Some love them, some hate them. They eat rotors pretty badly, and they're not especially cheap. Genuine pads are better priced than the Bendix alternative from memory. I wouldn't buy one, but that's just because I don't like the feel of them. They're getting fairly cheap though.
It is the SR20 model, yes. Usually a fairly safe purchase. And yes it does seem rather pricey. In saying that, it's getting harder and harder to find a decent cheap car these days. More so at a dealer. At least there is a warranty though which is worth something.
As a mondeo owner I would recommend them every time however go for a facelift model (2004+). Have done 75,000 troublefree km's over the last 6 years, most reliable car I have ever owned, safe too with front, side and curtain airbags.
You see quite a lot of mondeos on trademe with stupid high k's, even the late model ones. I assume they're ex lease cars, so you know if you can get one with lowish k's it'll last if looked after.
I'll second that! I'm a nissan guy, but I am super stoked with my fielder. Its just so well designed, great to drive, easy to work on (only had to do maintenance jobs) and I think they look pretty nice for a wagon to.
Mondeo diff gears go, and you cannot buy replacements without buying the whole diff, and a large portion of the second hand diffs are rooted. Autos are real spendy to fix/replace.
they do drive ok and reasonaly economical.
would take Primera everyday of the week as long as it not CVT.
I've been a bad bad boy. I should read the rules and behave before I get spanked by an admin
QR20DD can also be problematic. P11 non CVT will be the winner. Seen plenty of BHG's on Mondeos now
