Wheel repairs.

Have a set of 17" wheels I wouldn't mind tidying up.

One option involves get them blasted, painted then getting the face skimmed again, just hit up the local wheel repair guy, and he wants 120+ per wheel to do the skimming in the CNC then clearcoat to seal it up. Entire face of the wheel would need to be skimmed.
The two wheels I took in today are straight and have very minor kerbage so would not need building up at all, the other two have a slightly heavier amount of kerbing so might require a bit of welding to build up in a couple of places I think.

Is $120+GST/wheel a good/typical price, or are there places which do it significantly cheaper? Just the skimming, the paint and blasting I can/will get done elsewhere.

Not really feeling $600 of love for the wheels, so may just bog and paint the whole wheel and be damned with the nicer looking machined face.

But $120/wheels sounds not too bad for completely re-machining the faces.

You think $120/wheel is expensive? Arrow wheels charges $350 per wheel when it's only curb damage, and wiped out my perfectly good stickers when I told them not to.

So I reckon it's a good deal for $120!

Nah, i sort of figured $120 wasn't horrendous, but i figure 10-15 mins of machining time per wheel @ ~$200/hr plus setup time would be normal machine shop rates. And I figure they have some quick way of generating the profile that probably only takes them about 20mins, its not like its a complicated profile.

This was an engineering crowd who have now merged and relocated to the shore to become Wheel Fixit (http://www.wheelfixit.co.nz/)

Used them to repair some rims, it was $150 per wheel for cracks and/or buckling so was happy with the service and price, but I only had one wheel per set to do...

The other crowd I've used is MacWeld in Drury, also good service and pricing.

But yeah, when more than one rim in a set is fubared... I'd say just get stuck in with the sandpaper yourself, easy enough to clean up the face/lip and polish it up... only problem is if the curbing is so bad you have to add material... wheels are cheap enough these days that its just about not worth repairing unless they're something special. Thought about hunting Yahoo auctions for another pair to replace the damaged?

Functionally they are fine, and given that I have 4.75 sets of wheels for this car I dont need to buy another set of wheels. I'll email macweld and see if they come back with a better price otherwise it might be a case of bogging the lip and just painting the wheels.

Found myself in Bunnings walking past the sandpaper and thought, meh, why not. have given one wheels a quick going over with 100grit and there are a few spots where a bit of weld and file/sand might be needed, or I might leave them with some small marks.
One of them will definately need some weld so I might bug Malcolm to do that for me since all our welders at work are off-site for the foreseeable future.

Can see myself ending up with tennis elbow by the time I get down to the finer grits tho.

$350?! I was charged $780 for one of my curbed wheels from them! There are guys on Wairau Road that do the same job much cheaper, 'Wheel Fix It' is what they are called. 1-2 days turn-around time as well.

$120/wheel sounds good to me (if that particular service would fix the oxidation)

Wheel repair services... but that was just skimming after I'd got them stripped and paint/powdercoated.

Grant @ GT Refinishers repainted my old Meisters from gold centres/polished outers to satin black, and fixed a few little bits of kerbing for $400/set.
