1jz and r154 clutch

Postby bossman » Sat Jul 13, 2013 10:48 pm

Hey, looking at buying a heavy clutch for my 1jz with a r154 gearbox. The car is not going to be a road car only for drifting/track use. I Am aiming for about 300kw. What brand/type of clutch would you recommend? Or what are people with similar setups running?
Cheers

Have you upgraded your R154 to cope better with the harsh drifting environment? Like all gearboxes, they dont take well to shock loading, so if you are planning on using a solid clutch, upgrading the box might be a good idea if you want some longevity out of it.

I would think you would want to look at some kind of button clutch to get good bite, and less chance of slippage when clutch kicking etc, but the best thing you can do is email one of the respected clutch experts in NZ and tell them what usage it will see, and how much torque your engine will deliver, and they will recommend something to suit.

If you have an old clutch and flywheel, you can save some money by using them for the rebuild parts. Expect to pay around $600-700.

I had a clutch made up for my R154/2JZ combo a year or so ago, and its a full face disc, with an upgraded 2600lb cover. I ask them to build to spec to be able to cope with 350rwkw all day at the track, and so far, it hasnt disappointed :)

They would be a great place to start. When I was planning mine, I rang up there and talked to the owners son about what I would be best getting, and we came to a carbon ceramic disc with upgraded cover.

But in the end I got it locally down here in Wellington, as the shop who rebuilt my gearbox had a good contact, so it was easier to get it all on one bill.

Good on you for upgrading it, its a good investment. Im guessing you are doing the thrust washer, bearing retainer, and billet shift forks etc?
