Lvv cert query

Postby MR2SIK » Sun Jul 14, 2013 6:33 pm

Hi all.
New car came with a spare set of adjustable suspension.
Guy said he swapped it back to standard as he preferred the softer ride.
The cert plate was also removed at the same time by the certifier.
Does this mean that the car is effectively unknown in the eyes of the powers that be, or is there a short cut to have the car certed for the suspension again? Perhaps without having to pay full price lol?

No shortcuts, if the cert plate has been removed & returned to LVVTA then you are back to square one.

Sounds like you need to do some EXTREME mods as well as installing the coilovers, to make the $400-$500 cert cost worthwhile.

If you're going for another cert, do not cert with big rims.

I've made the mistake of certifying with aftermarket rims, now I'm stuck to that 1 size forever, until I do another cert.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

It seems a little bit like money grabbing to make somebody pay to re-cert their car, if all they have done is return the cars suspension/wheels etc back to 100% factory, as the factory parts were good enough in the first place.

Clipping the ticket twice springs to mind.

I don't think that the issue, removing the cert is free AFAIK, its getting a new cert to re-fit a new set of "adjusties"

This.

car had and was certed for Cusco adjustable suspension a while back.
from what I gather, the certifier was also the previous owners mechanic, so when they decided they wanted standard suspension, the plate got taken off at the same time. I thought that was odd, but turns out its the legal thing to do. Only thinking it cos said suspension is currently in the boot of the car.

Just so used to seeing cars on trademe with things like ' certed for 26b bridgy quad turbz but currently running a 4k coz cant afford da rebuild, just drop in a rotang and u b sweet'

FTFY, half the cars seem to be different to the cert which means they are worthless and more hassle than a stock car IMO.

Doesn't matter what size you cert on, you are still stuck with them until a new cert. Can cert for two wheel sizes though, may cost a bit more as they have to perform all their tests and measurements on both wheel sizes.

Argh, did not realise this was the case. I'd need to buy two sets of staggered rims to be able to run semis and road tyres legally. Balls.

So uncerted you can run different sized wheels as you see fit, but certed and you're stuck with the size that you had at the time?

Do they only record wheels sizes if you are certing for wheel/suspension/brake/steering mods? (things that wheel size might matter for) Or is it something they always record, even if its just engine mods?

Wheel size is always recorded and that is the ONLY size you can legally run.

Yes.
The moment you cross ANY of the cert thresholds, the cars is certed as a whole. It must be safe as a complete vehicle and tested as such, changing wheel size after that can dramatically change the dynamics of the vehicle.

Which is where the certification structure fails at logic... Lose a hell of a lot of the adjustability you have with a non certified car.

Which is why bunches of people who run adjustable suspension, and run it at a practical height (above 100mm) that generally flies under the police's radar, choose to do the swapsies every 6 months at WOF time. 12 month WOFs (for cars 2000+) will be welcomed by them.

There are brand new budget tyres being sold that are far more dangerous than getting a car certified on 18s and going to 17s or vice versa. Off topic slightly, but are any tyres even certified here, or do we blindly follow the DOT certifications from overseas?

Do they measure how wide the wheel is too? Or just the diameter?

They measure the rim size not tyre size
eg: 15x8 17x9

Amen to that.

Some of the decision making processes are completely bonkers.

There should be a certain amount of flexibility when it comes to various items, like for example wheels/tyres on a car that has been certified.

A car that is certified with 17x8.5 F and 17x9.5 R aftermarket wheels, should be able to go back to the factory fitment of 17x8 F and 17x9.5 R without a another inspection/fee as there is absolutely nothing dangerous about reverting to the original wheels.
