AE101 Levin Speedo Cluster Upgrade

Postby Flannelman » Fri Jul 12, 2013 11:26 pm

So, I had a minor accident last week. Nothing major few bent panels that have been replaced. However, I have been lacking a speedo, taco and all the lights by and including the fuel guage. Today I found that on the back of the cluster there is a copper line that is burnt in various places.

Since this revelation, I'm wondering if there is any upgrades available? Be it aftermarket or TRD. Would it be complete, or in seprate pieces?

I haven't spoken to our sponsors yet as just getting and idea of what possibilities are out there.

edit, this is for a AE101 levin

The best cluster they had, in my opinion, was the digital version. It was a very expensive optional extra however and there aren't many floating around these days, although I have seen a couple in for sale in the last few years. The speedometer is digital but the tachometer and fuel gauge etc is still analogue. Took one for a test drive once and it was very cool to drive with, but if the digital display died you'd be up shit creek without a paddle.

Apart from that, the only other option I can think of, other than the standard one, was a Tom's carbon fibre gauge surround. Pretty much as rare as the digital cluster though, so would make more sense just to replace your buggered stock cluster with another one and keep your eyes peeled for either the digital cluster or Tom's surround in future.

Here's some pics of the Tom's carbon surround:

Pretty sure you need some different sensors to use that, maybe it was just speed sensor, can't recall.

According to ToyoDIY the speed sensors are the same between the analogue and digital clusters, however I do recall reading a thread on here a little while ago where someone was having trouble getting one to work when switching from analogue to digital. I got the connectors/wiring with it so it may just be a couple of the pin-outs that are different. A guy I know in Pakistan who has one in his AE101 sedan (lucky bastard) said it was plug-and-play with his old analogue plugs, so might be the same case with the Levin cluster.

Good that you got 3/4 of a tank of fuel with it too given the petrol price these days :D

Yeah that was me trying to get one to work in my old trueno.

It didn't plug and play with my analogue gauges loom :( would have been awesome though. if I recall correctly it had an extra socket, I didn't have time to sort it out so just gave it away with the car when I sold it.

Here's a pic from the back of my old one.

Bottom is the Digital top is analogue

I don't have a pic of the front anymore, but mine was a 4age one with the right red line, and a manual one, so no gear lights.

^ Ohh yes, that's right. Did you get the connectors with yours? I cut them off when I found this one today. Half tempted to try it in the GF's AE101 Levin. This one came out of a 4A-FE model, hence the 8k rev limit.

 I should've tried to convince the wrecker that the "digital gas tank" was an integral part of the operation and should be included in the price.
