Urethane remover

Postby Akane » Sun Aug 04, 2013 4:49 pm

Hi guys,

I've removed the old sideskirt, which was stuck on with Urethane.

Now I need to remove this nasty stuck on gunk, is there any products that I can buy in Auckland that will soften / remove / make my life a shitload easier removing this stuff?

Cheers.

Methyl-Ethyl-Ketone (MEK) is about the only thing that will soften it, but it'll soften everything else like the paint, and disolve plastic.

Other than that try some heat, but if it's been on a long time I don't like your chances.

Car paint is urethane so whatever will dissolve that will damage the paint.
There is a mechanical way to remove this gunk without damaging paint:

eraser wheel.

The generic version will also work (any car paint shop should have this in stock) and is about 5x cheaper.

MEK is nasty stuff, I'll avoid that at all cost unless I want a respray.

Thanks sergei will give that wheel thing a try.

Those wheel things are AMAZING! Put em in a battery drill and away ya go. They wear out after a while but are well worth buying.

Wurth also do em too.

Will a new sharp craft knife remove most of the bulk?
Or am i thinking more of silicone sealant?

It's hard to not damage the paint work if you use a sharp knife.
