Fuel spilling problem.

Postby FST4RD » Tue Aug 06, 2013 4:12 pm

Hey all, the last 2 times I've gone to fill up the work car (Honda Jazz), I've removed the fuel cap and fuel has started pouring out, around half a liter to a liter.
I never let the tank get under 1/4. The first time it did it I drove around for about 30k after filling up, stopped and removed the fuel cap and it hissed quite a bit. I didn't think this was normal for a full tank?
I'm used to a bit of hissing when removing the cap, but never fuel pouring out

Anyone ever had this?

This is my thoughts, although I've never come across this issue before. I was talking to a mate that's been a mechanic for a couple decades and he said he's never come across this happening before.

How much pressure can a tank hold? I'm thinking for fuel to be forced out there must be a lot of pressure going on in there, and I'm a bit worried the tank is either going to split and lose it's contents, or rupture and cause some real damage/fire.

The fuel cap has pressure relief valve. First thing that might go pop is the hose clamp on the filler neck. The tank is fairly solid.

if the filler tube is very low in the tank, and breather is blocked, the fuel can be pushed out under expansion.

mates HQ ute did this just days after full repaint and blistered the panel below filler

Sweet, I'll let the boss know.
I told her about it the first time it happened and said to hold off calling the mechanic till I ran the tank down and meet to fill it again, to see if it would happen again
Not sure the car has a relief valve? It's just solid plastic with a thread to screw into the opening. However I've not taken that much of a close look, it possibly does.

AFAIK 20V 4AGE's vent via the charcoal canister into the intake
manifold. There is a solenoid that opens when the engine is
running so that the fume gets burned. Maybe the the Jizz has
a similar system, and the valve is not opening ??

Venting thru the cap is probably frowned upon, as all that pollution
control stuff is designed to reduce unburned hydrocarbons getting
into our breakfast cereals. Just a thought :)

Correct, emissions regulation prevent fuel caps from being able to vent,

If it has a charcoal canister it will use that method.
