Tyres on the Rona

Hey all, since I have moved to Christchurch me and Dad have started sharing the corona, as such he wants to put a new set of tyres on it.

It is not a performance car obviously but I am not going to put on some no name rubbish from china.

Tyres need to be 185/60/14

Seems the really good ones (RE002 etc) cost around 200 per and then the federals and hankooks cost around 150 per.

Has anyone brought some tires in that 100-150 each region recently that have performed well. My biggest priority is getting something that grips well in the wet and dry as the current set do not at all.

Bear in mind that generally the stickier they are, the faster they'll wear out.
And RE002s would be massive overkill in an ST171 (it was a 171, not a 191, right?)

Some of the chinese brands are actually getting a bit more reasonable than they used to be.

Weigh up how important grip vs wear vs price is. Other option if price is a concern is to look in to a change in size if you're doing a full set.

oh yeah I would never put a set of RE002s on the rona, was just using it to establish a price point.

just put those a.drives on the back of my wife's caldina to see how they go - so far: really quiet, no issues in wet (its a caldina gt, AWD auto but most of the power would be to the fronts which are still GIII's)

seem pretty sweet though, i got them for $130 each I think it was, from a trademe store up here.

Cosmetically they are pretty standard, they dont have a bead lip is the only thing I really noticed about them on the rims - but they are balloon spec 205/60/15s on her car anyway.

Cheers for that man, they seem like a decent option, known brand, not totally eco orientated, decent price too. $440 for a set fitted and balanced seems okay too. Got to be better than the "lucky star" brand I have on now

Good guys. I didn't even research tyres for the mrs' rolla last time, just sent her there after telling them (was there getting tyres for mine) the sort of driving / budget to work with. I think it was around the $500 mark for a full set + alignment. No idea what they even put on TBH, but i've used them as long as I can remember so trust them.

Rav is running a set 2nd hand RA23 Hankook tyres from them too. They manage to hold traction even with the mighty 3SGE full noise around corners

I put Supercats on the Pulsar, $300 for the set. Wasn't expecting much but was pleasantly surprised.. they're quiet, handle very well wet or dry and haven't worn much at all. Would recommend them for a budget tyre.

i got some neutons (5000s?) on the sti at tsoobs recommendation, we only had it for a few months after that but i was quite impressed with their performance given the cost.

would happily recommend / use again for daily duties

I got a set of kumhos on my Corolla for $89 each. Cannot fault them for a daily driver that also does country roads.
Were that exact size too

I had supercats on the Mazda 626 and I was also impressed for the price.

Got neutons off tsoob also for the Gti and they are pretty good too even in the wet the cheapies have surprised me.

When I worked at a car rental place we put supercats on everything. They're a good all round tyre with good lifetime. If you don't drive like a maniac they are all you need.

Go see Bruce at central city tyres by mobil at the start of lincoln rd. Hes my brothers father in law. And a good guy. He'll sort you out. Tell him Andrew Green sent you. Has new and secondhand stuff.

I am all for good tyres on a car but seriously why would you even consider much past $100-120 for that sort of car? The suspension will mess your shit up well before the tyres do.

I've had those A drives in that size, decent tyre, would probably rate them slightly higher than Supercats in the wet. My B16a EJ1 came with Supercats on the front, fairly new, and it would spin both in the wet (had an LSD) in second gear when it hit vtec.

Agree with all of the above, the incremental performance gain with any tyre above the $120 mark will be almost unrecognisable in an old Corona.
