Soft Struts?

Postby mcfatty1000 » Wed Aug 28, 2013 5:13 pm

Ok, just went for a warrant for a sw20 and they've come back wanting me to get the front struts checked, the guy was worried their getting/are too soft and wants a second opinion on them from somewhere else (pretty reasonable I thought)

So,

Where is best to get new front struts if they're needed? (Pricewise)

Should I replace the backs as well at the same time?

They're not leaking, so any ideas on what may have caused them to go soft?

I'll get them checked again tomorrow, I hope its not an issue overall but worth getting some ideas now

Check pricing with Mark (1I1) our sponsor. He can get you a good price on OEM Bilstein Struts if you do go with new ones.

My current set isn't leaking but are clearly not working as they should. New set of Bilsteins are on the cards in a few months.

As for why they are soft... they are probably 20+ years oil, the oil has broken down, the gas has leaked out, and things are generally just wearing out. It'll happen to you too in 20years. :)

Bilsteins from Mark are the best value for money.

Cool - thought so re the reason, just checking there wasn't something I needed to look out for.

Should I get a full set? I'm assuming the rears are about the same age etc

Hang on... the guy doing the WOF wants a second opinion on whether your dampers are good or not? How has he got a WOF authority if he cant make that call for himself?!?

Not really - He was going to fail it, but is being nice and letting me get them tested - If I can prove that they're up to spec with a letterhead etc then I'm good (until next time in all likelihood)

I suspect they're the weakest links in the suspension at this point making it seem worse

So basically it has failed on struts being too soft, and if you can prove otherwise then it's a pass.

Pretty much yep.
Mainly, its his opinion that they're too soft but if I can prove they pass via other testing and can prove that, then I can argue from that

Reasonable overall I think, at least its not a, they failed and it'll cost you $xxxx type arrangement
