Toyota Vitz Problem

Postby ncha » Thu Oct 10, 2013 10:45 am

Hey guys,

So my mum's daily driver (automatic) which I use frequently and I have noticed its gas consumption is ridiculous (bad) for the 1L 1SZ-FE. I estimate around average 10l/100 . Bouncing between 9 - 11L/100. 110000ks, no check engine lights etc.

I have noticed while in Drive and coming to a stop, it would have sluggish idle until you give it some gas or get going. Obviously it comes with no Tacho so I cannot tell exactly how bad the range is jumping but its definitely there.

It has about the same gas consumption as her last car, AE111 Levin 4age 20v auto. Even compared to my sr20det , its fairly similar.

I have a oil change coming up for it when I find the time. What else should I do?

Change o2 sensor? Could be bad after 100000ks?
Air filter still has life but will do this too
Reset ECU?
Spark Plugs?

Cheers, and I also searched here and couldn't find anything definitive

Definitely have the 02 checked on a scope.

Also, look for anything that might have come unplugged, like a Map sensor hose etc...that would throw it into a fairly rich safe mode I would expect

Thanks for the reply.

Where is the MAP sensor usually on a normal 4 piston engine?

Also where are the best wreckers to get Toyota parts? Only familiar with Hondas in auckland.

Just so I can weigh up buying new from Toyota.. or just get a second hand with warranty sensor

I have no experience working on a Vitz, so couldnt tell you the location of the MAP sensor, with certaintly, but ofter, they are found near the firewall, with a vacuum line running from it, to the intake manifold.

Look for a small plastic rectangle, with a sticker on it saying vacuum sensor or something similar.

I had a 1 litre Vitz many years ago with the same problem, rough idle ,very sluggish ,high fuel consumption,I had it checked out for the rough idle, they fitted a replacement stepper motor for the idle but it didnt fix the problem,I never found the problem, and sold the car(I couldnt handle the lack of power, very noticable when taking off from the lights),I often wondered if it needed the VVTi system cleaning out,I read somewhere they get sludged up if the oil isnt changed often enough, and cause problems.

The sluggish idle isint too bad. Everything else runs fine and its only at a stop. I think ill start with o2 sensor and plugs and the map sensor.

So is it better to buy from toyota or wreckers?

You may want to get your parts tested first before buying replacement parts. For Toyota parts, check this thread: viewtopic.php?t=66290

i'd go new for o2 personally. plugs are most likely well due.

frankly i think you'd be better off spending the money on a pro to work out the actual issue rather than throwing it at random second hand parts, particularly based on internet hear-say, but thats just me.

I agree, could be lots of things. Torque converter, ecu etc.

Does it have the same problem when cold?

Pretty sure the car will be in open loop mode when it is first started so won't be getting feedback from the O2 sensors. Maybe one of the guys with tuning experience could tell you for sure.

Check the VVT oil strainer. It's a small cylindrical mesh filter which the oil passes through before VVT activates. Over time they get bunged up but fortunately they're a serviceable part (something that most people NEVER check or clean). If it's partially blocked and is affecting the operation of VVT then your power will be down and fuel consumption will suffer. On the 1000cc Vitz engine it should be on the driver's side of the head, held in with a bolt. Once you remove the bolt the filter should slide out and you can give it a dowsing with degreaser or brake cleaner.
