4age gearbox differences

Postby Kiwi6539 » Wed Nov 06, 2013 8:11 pm

Hi all.

Can anyone tell me how to tell the difference visually between a E56 AND C160 LSD gearboxes.

Or if there's any numbers or ways to tell.

I have a 20 valve silvertop and gearbox at work shop. The gearbox from what I know is lsd.

I know the silvertop never came with lsd as far as I know.

So wanting to see if there's a chance it's a C160 6 speed. Or its the 5 speed E56

Also I'm looking for camber plates for a ae82 1985 if anyone has any to sell.

Cheers

im pretty certain that silvertops and LSDs did come together from time to time, and im also pretty certain the 6 speed only came with blacktops.

then again if its not the original gearbox then im out of ideas, never had dick to do with C160s so wouldnt know one from a bar of soap :)

from the way everyone talks on here, you are better off without a 6 speed anyway.

if you are wanting to know how many gears it has, rather than if its LSD or not, surely you could just check that with the shifter linkages?

Post a picture looking through the axle hole this will allow identification of lsd or not. Then pictures of the tops of the boxes and then can say if 5 or 6 speed.

you should be able to count the gears by moving the linkages on the box? although reverse is quite stiff on c160s (or was on mine)

the bolt holes on for the gearbox mount on a c56 make a triangle

on c160 the bolts are in a line

E56 is a much bigger and heavier unit, with a steel removable panel opposite the bell housing. The output shafts are much bigger as well.
