I think my next car will be a BP (2003+) Legacy.

Does anyone have any thoughts between the 3.0L and the 2.0T?
Thoughts and recommendations on the two? I'd like to know the difference in fuel usage between the two.

The 2L NA is not an option.

Common faults and things to look for?

I know its the wrong forum and you poor buggers are stuck with 4ages haha.

Plenty on here have Subarus, and the 3L is the pick of the bunch. They give the odd issue with air/fuel ratio sensors and bugger all else really.

the 3l makes for a nice drive, even the 2.5's go ok (have a 2.5 outback as a work car)

I have a 3 litre legacy and it goes great uses around 11l per 100km around town/motorway, the 2.5 litres have a pretty bad reputation for bhg.

2004 3.0R wagon owner here, love it, highly reccomend. A bit thirsty in stop start traffic, but awesome car to drive long distance in.

Approaching 180km on the odo and has been faultless in the 70 thousand kms we have had it.

Will be looking to get another Legacy wagon when its time to move this one on.

the filter mesh in the turbo line clogs up from lack of servicing resulting in dead turbos

my work hacks done 280+km and still going well, the early 2.5 quad cam motor was bad for BHG but there seems to be alot of high mileage later 2.5 SOHC vehicles around.

I have a manual BP5 GT-B for my daily, just clocked over 230,000km. I've done about 6,000kms in it so far and really like it. Apparently mine's had nothing major done since it arrived in the country at ~90,000kms, but the most common mechanical issue is the turbo oil line mesh screen as mentioned earlier.

On the AVCS equipped engines (which will include the EZ30R in the 3.0R), I've heard stories of the AVCS seals failing and oil eventually making its way through the sensor & along the loom to the ECU, but that's easy to check and ensure it doesn't occur in future. Small things like the clock/fuel economy meter LCD stops working, and factory stereo can start playing up, wheel bearing wear seems above average from my research too.

I haven't driven the 3.0r, I did consider them, but chose the 2.0T due to higher power/torque and (in theory) better fuel economy. Despite the claimed ~340NM at 2400rpm for the manual GTB, there's not much happening before 3,000rpm, so around town you've got to keep it on the boil if you're in a hurry.

Economy wise mine gets down in the 9L-10L/100km range on the open road easily, and my driving style certainly isn't geared towards economy. The previous owner claimed ~8.6L/100km on his daily commute between Levin and Palmy, which I'd believe was possible. Around town I get ~13.5L/100km, although the majority of my driving is 4km hilly trips, usually on a cold engine, where it'll only hit normal operating temp by the time I get there in the summer. That city economy might not seem great, but compared to all of the fuel guzzling performance cars I've had it's the best yet.

The 3.0s are very nice to drive, I do like the torque.
I need to have a play in a turbo one for a good comparison, but from the sounds the 6cyl is the way to go.

The 6 cylinder one is chain driven from memory as well, plus 6 speed manual!

I've driven the 3 Litre (Auto) and a GT-B manual. Both had bilsteins which are a great factory option.
I was not a fan of the 3.0R at all, I know a lot of people seem to love them but it didn't do anything for me - maybe it's just a bad example but it had done half the Kms the GT-B had on it. The GT-B is a lot more fun but at the same time quite smooth compared with previous models, quite a good all-rounder - would probably have one in the garage if I wasn't so stubborn.

Good luck finding a manual though!

I must have pretty good luck ;)

However you are correct in the fact that the pre 03 RS30 was auto only.

And then searching for Wagons cuts it down again, It seems you can pick up a tidy auto 3L for about 10k with around 150ks on the clock, Manuals being quite a bit 'rarer' and thus more expensive

I got one, BL sedan tho. Manual wagons are rare as. Drove a '06 BP before I got mine but wanted one with less km.

Have owned my '05 3.0R for about 4 months. Paid $15k for it with 74km on the clock. Is a black, 6 speed spec b, so has 18's and Bilsteins. Also has a 12 speaker Mcintosh stereo which is pretty decent!

They are a bit thirsty round town, but open road is pretty good. Was getting just over 10km/l going to Cambridge and back towing a trailer with a dirtbike on it not driving economical at all.

Not sure if it's just mine or not, but my throttle is stupidly sensitive. Bit of a pain at first but I got used to it.

I'd say definately go for a drive in one to see if you like it, I love mine!

2004 Legacy B Spec here (with Subtech goodies and PBMS tune), bloody awesome car to drive.

Sent you a PM with lots of info.

Depending on your budget my order of recommendation

- 2.0 GT-B (with subtech pipe and pbms tune)
- 2.0 GT-B (stock manual) - rare
- 3.0R
- 2.0 GT-B tiptronic (stock tiptronic)

It depends on what you want to use the car for?, do you want a cruiser that can still tow a trailer or do you want a big wrx?

Little bit left field but I've just got a facelift GT-B Liberty (aus spec Legacy :? ) which is 2.5L and did a trip from Sydney to Brisbane a couple of weeks back, managed to get 775km from a tank, although I got 61.7L into what I thought was a 60L tank when I filled it

Thats about 7.7L per 100km.

Thats pretty good, flat roads ?

Reminds me we did about 8.5L per 100kms from Hamilton to Wellington.
